People misplace personal items all the time. Whether it’s a pair of keys or even a cell phone; it happens. But what about being unable to find nearly 300 automobiles? As absurd as it may sound, officials in Miami-Dade County recently discovered 298 never-before-used Toyota Priuses. Officials found the fleet of electric vehicles after having learned of them via El Nuevo Herald, a Spanish language newspaper in South Florida.

...this thread should be titled "Last Week in Florida News:"
Off-Topikstanian officials found out about the fleet of electric vehicles after having learned of them via this thread called City of Miami discovers 300 vehicles it bought in 2006. And never used. in TCL, a hate-breeding, uppity, dysfunctional, playground of a forum that we love in teh interwebz.

It's a completely crazy story and a repost.
I'm still in disbelief that this can happen.

Really? With everything we KNOW about government and government procurement practices ...THIS is unbelievable? come-on, now.
I was listening to this on NPR yesterday - the total vehicle count is much higher.
Here's how it happens(from me, not npr):
City budget slashed, people let go/maintenance budgets slashed, etcetc.
the motor pool doesn't change their operating practices, so regularly scheduled purchase orders still go out for xx cars every 4 months(or whatever). Cars are delivered, bills are paid, nobody at the "i park the cars" level gives a crap enough to raise a stink that none of the cars are being used because, after all, it isn't THEIR money that is being wasted.![]()
