Thread: 337 vs 20th.... Which one to choose??

    1. 05-01-2012 04:23 PM #1
Currently I have a 1.8t Jetta but I'm wanting to upgrad. I miss my gti way to much but I'm wanting a newer one. I've been debating between the two. I know both have the 6speed, the 337 with the 2.0t and the 20th edition with a 1.8t. Besides that I'm not sure which route to go. I'm sure I'd love either one but does anyone have any suggestions. Kinda sucks the 337 doesn't have a sunroof..

I love my 20th but if I had a choice and could find a nice 337, I'd choose the 337. Less made, came with BBS RC, which IMO was way better than Aristos. Also I like the red stripes on the seats better than grey. And no sunroof makes for a lighter car.

      337 FTW

personally, i love sunroofs...so the 20th would get my vote. My other car/daily driver (the cadillac) at the moment doesn't have a sunroof and it drives me nuts. I also like the 20th gauge cluster better..but 337s are nice too..and it's hard to beat a set of shot peened RCs if they are still in good shape.

oh and both cars have a 1.8t in them.

Really? I was misinformed and read that the 337 has a 2.0t I like them both but I love my sunroof on my jetta. I hate seeing my car though. I had a crazy custom 96gti and didnt see other people with a car that looked like mine. I would like to have that feeling again. Kind of leaning toward the 20th but I love rare cars so the 337 is more my style. Choices choices. Does anyone know if there is a difference in suspension or the exhaust system? If the engine is the same then the turbo will be identical I'd imagine.

337 has a the same motor and trans as a 20th edition. it came with a 1.8t not a 2.0t.....

either way i would choose a 20th anyday over the 337.

The only mechanical difference between a 337 and a 20th is the 337 has a quicker ratio steering rack. The 337 was meant to be the older "twin" brother of the original GTI, hence no sunroof for less weight and lower CG. Otherwise the two cars are identical mechanically.

But, the 20th has the far superior interior. And personally, I like moon roofs.

If your serious how much are you willing to spend on a clean 337?

62k on the clock. It's my daily.

If you want to have that unique look, then I'd say go for a yellow or blue 20th. I know there are a lot of things that set a 337 apart from a regular gti, but it's color is super common.
My 20th is currently: clean/dirty girl, out for the summer/hiding from salt and sand, CEL on/off. I currently love/hate my car.

i always wanted an imola yellow 20th, but i couldnt afford one. I found a 337 for 6k so i bought that, couldnt be happier

I liked 20th just because of the sunroof and my Jazz Blue is quite the head turner, with the silver 337 more of just a basic looking gti but for the most part they are identical

Not saying this isn't true but i have not come across this information anywhere in the past so do you have supporting proof of this? Perhaps an article from somewhere or something? Personally between my buddys imola and my 337 they feel the same.

I would choose neither if I had the choice again.

The 337/20th are money pits when you get to replace the timing belt, lower control arms, AXELS(really VW? Seriously screwed the pooch on that one) and anything else.

Great car, don't get me wrong, but a frigging money pit.

Had mine since September and its been great. Luckily the timing belt job was already done, and the car got new coil packs under the recall already. But the timing belt job cost is going to be the same on any 1.8T. Its more than a 2.0, sure. But its much cheaper than fixing a damaged engine!

And if you want a money pit, own a B4 Passat or a Corrado

I have a 337... with all these bright color GTI's driving around I kinda wish mine was any color but silver. Love it for everything else though.

Depends on your use of the car.

      For a daily I prefer a sunroof. (20th)

Aristos are heavier, arguably harder to clean. (337)

Aesthetics like the 20th cluster vs. the interior differences (objective, I had my mirror caps painted uni-black as a homage to the 20th )

I decided on my 337 while shopping for a 20th after falling for Jazz Blue.

      tldr; 337 ftw.

Yeah a 337 is more me, only 1500 in the states and 200 in Canada but it would be a daily and for the sunroof option I'd rather have a 20th even though Id prefer the 337. I'd fly across the country to get a 337 but not so much for a 20th lol. Sucks but I'll probably end up sucking it up and getting the 20th, plus I can find one for a little cheaper and then get it custom painted.

The car chooses its owner, the owner doesn't choose the Car.

Anyway, that's how it went with me when I looked at a bunch of GTI's,20th's and then I saw my GLI and knew that was the one for me.

You need to weigh out the differences in the two
Both are personally 100 great but id prefer a 20th for its sunroof and color choices
Oh and aristos are the best in my opinion
