Title says it all. I was on my way to grab dinner, stopped at a light and heard it. At first, I thought it was a car next to me. Then it kept on going, and my CEL came on. I pulled over, shut off the car, popped the hood.

Temp normal, no smoke, restarted and watched the engine. Rough idle, and it appears to be bucking.

Sounds like belt noise, not sure what is going on..

Any ideas? It will be heading to the dealer tomorrow under CPO warranty. Wish I had a VAG-com right now..anyone in ATL (close to Roswell area)?

No idea. Doesn't sound like a coil pack or the intake.

You should still be covered by the regular 5 year/ 60,000 miles power train warranty, unless your car has an unusually high mileage. At any rate, hopefully this will be resolved quickly - good luck with it!

Thanks for the reply. The car just rolled 50k, so you're right. I know that mileage is a bit high, which is why I'm thankful it is a CPO.

Friend of mine has a mkV GTI. He had a problem with his and brought it to the dealer. They said it was the injectors and after further analysis, the car went on fire. Eventually VWoA gave him a new replacement, but that was after months of a loaner car and a lousy bandaid reconstruction

Your story has me anxious, but I'm hoping for something fairly minor. It definitely seems fuel/ignition related, but the whine is just weird. We shall see soon enough.

    Thanks

So, it was a crank case breather valve. Also known as the PCV I think. They turned it around real quick and gave me a free loaner for the afternoon.

Back in business! Thanks for the replies.

Really inexpensive part and easy to change. They used to be a bit problematic on the previous ("FSI") engine, but not so much on the new one (since 2008.5, "TSI").
