I bought a Rabbit that soon started doing that. Burned oil, too. Turned out the previous owner had changed the oil religiously, every 2k miles, for several years, with HAVOLINE! (non SD-rated) Rings were caked with burned oil ash and basically stuck. Apparently, when cold, the oil that was blowing-by the stuck rings would seal things up good enough to get enough compression to start. When hot, though, the rings wouldn't seal good enough to get enough compression to start. If you re-started immediately, -like within 2-3 minutes, you might get it to start. After that, you could forget it until the motor was stone cold again. This might not be your problem. Hope it is not.
