    Thread: Wet Weather VRT Miss (not coil pack)

      Alright this one has me stumped so I figured I would turn to the folks that know it all. The car specs are below. I am getting a hard miss in wet weather, but only when I try to get into boost. The car will operate fine if I keep it under 3000 rpm and out of boost. Once I try to build any psi it will completely cut out. It feels like it completely cuts spark all together. I have replaced the coil pack (have also swapped it out with others before), swapped out the throttle body and MAF. All of this without any change. Anyone have any ideas? maybe timing backing down due to bad cam sensor?

      '96 Passat
      2.8L VR with a T04E
      C2 42# software

      runs like a raped ape, if it is dry out it runs perfectly normal. Once it is raining out it go nuts.

      than it's clearly something electrical. get a VAGCOM log and post it up

      I do not feel that it is plugs, wires, or coil due to it feeling like all the cylinders are down and out. I am leaning more towards cam position or a knock sensor. Any thoughts?

      can't make that assumption without an accurate VAGCOM scan, or a simple Ohm meter to check on the voltage being sent to it. possibly a break in a wire that is causing an interuption when moisture is exposed

      Make sure all the environmental seals are in the connectors.

      where does your intake sit, i ask this because i fixed my same exactly problem by moving my intake up out of the fender well. up into the bay so water could not get to it.

      if it was electrical it would miss even out of boost, i replaced my coil thinking the same thing, but then i got home on a wet day poped the hood there was no water on the coil, distributor, or plug wires, took the intake off and had water up in the maf sensor. cleaned it and put it under the hood and its doing great in the wet now.

      also what does your wide band say when you get into boost, mine would go to 10-1 or richer which was flooding the car making it feel like a ignition cut.

      Ginsterman would an OBD2 car have this sensor? I cannot remember ever seeing one. If so I can check it out. I am going to replace the wires when they come in and the plugs tonight.

      The intake is located on the frame rail, it is an AEM filter with there hydro shield deal. I have not looked into the intake after it has missed or ran poorly to see if I can getting water on the MAF but it is a good idea.

      Out of curiosity, do you have a Limited Slip? Do your tires suck in water? maybe they are breaking loose immediately? beyond that, I would think that its your Engine Speed/Crank Speed sensor, it looks just like the knock sensor, but it's in the front. It's easier if you just jack it up. If the wire and it's interefance coil is at all cut, that's most likely the problem. If it looks like, you are better off OHM testing it.
