Thread: Strange problem

  1. 05-02-2012 02:46 PM #1
This is kind of a long story but bear with me. 98 Jetta TDI owner here.
The car starts making noise with a slight vibration. A intermittent grinding sound. So I drive it until it fails. And it did fail, or so I though thats what it was. My car still has the original axles so I have the big vibration dampener on the right front. It broke loose. So I cut it off and think that problem is solved. Car still makes the same noise with slight vibration. So I replace the right front wheel bearing. Now the noise is gone so that was definitely the source of that. Now, I still have slight vibration. It only happens under certain throttle conditions and it's different every time. Here are my ideas:
    1. Right front drive shaft out of balance.
    2. Motor mount gone bad.
    3. Out of balance tire. Noticed the left front tire doesn't have a weight on it. But I wasn't sure that it ever had one.

    What say you?

You removed the vibration dampener from the right cv axle, why wouldn't it vibrate now?

You could open the hood, and look at the engine to see if it's moving around, or sitting low (which would indicate the engine mounts are shot).

You could rotate the tires front to rear to see if the vibration moves to confirm that it's a tire.

On the other hand, it's a diesel, it's going to rattle, vibrate, buck, and puke.

The new axles don't come with a vibration dampener because they aren't needed.

Correction. New Chinese low/poor quality, junk axles, which are smaller diameter, and solid (original axles are hollow) don't come with vibration dampeners.

    Who says they aren't needed?

Anyway, back on subject, anyone else want to chime in on my car problem?

I would also like to add that I've had the car up on a lift. There's no play in the drive shaft at all. Its pretty solid.
