Thread: 2012 GLI RCD 510 to RNS 510

  1. 05-02-2012 03:31 PM #1
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. I know it is better to search and I have. I am looking to see what is generally involved in this swap at the title. I would look to find a head unit from a 2012 GLI to switch with mine. Would I just be able to swap head units or is this more complicated than that?

You need to swap the radio, install the gps antenna inside the dash, disconnect the compass module, and use VCDS to code it properly.

So I should be fine about the disc changer and Bluetooth hardware? From my understanding the rns is also a DVD player? I was reading about some of the disc changers in vw's being separate from the head unit. Same goes for the Bluetooth? And about disconnecting the compass, will it still show up on the MFD? It will just read from the new rns 510 unit. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, it'll be fine. The cd/dvd slot is on the stereo and it will play DVD's. You can unlock the video in motion feature with a flash using a cd-r. The bluetooth is under the passenger side front seat. Everything plugs right in. The compass info will come from the gps antenna through the can-bus.

Great decision to ditch the broken RCD-510 for a better system. I can't wait til my new RNS-315 comes in from VW. POS RCD-510..

I'm thinking about doing the same thing.

How much do RNS 510 systems go for retail and used? Will it have everything necessary for a swap or will there be any additional purchases necessary?

I would like to know if I can swap an RNS-510 with fender from the Passat into the 2012 GLI Autobahn.

Yes, you can swap it. The radio is the same it's the coding that changes the settings from Fender to Dynaudio or whatever you have. You need VCDS to change the coding. If you don't have it just search Vag com locator on google.

I think this post is allowed... hopefully. If not, sorry.

I'm swapping out my RNS-510 from a 2010 GTI. If anyone is interested, PM me.
