  1. 05-02-2012 11:12 PM #1
Hi Im new here. I just bought a 97 Golf for $800 bucks. it need some work but will be a awesome once done.
this guy didnt know how to take car of a car at all!

When i drove it home there was some thing i saw right off the bat that he PO didnt tell me/lied about. First gear goes into gear when it wants to. which i have been noticing some of the linkage is lose. and the clutch slips some.

The seats smell like smoke and must. anyone know how to remove that smell from the fabric?

Is that just a drop in cam or would I need to tweak the timing or an adjustable cam gear?

A good way to get rid of the smell of the seats is to remove them and take them to the car wash and pressure wash them. Just make sure to do it on a nice hot day so you can leave them out in the sun to dry off. Might as well wash the carpet at the same time.

It use to work great for me when I use to flip cars.

nice find and welcome, a lot of new Mk3 owners lately

do you have any plans besides tearing it apart?

are you keeping a secret from us?

is this going to be one of those "look at my Mk3 shell" and then in a week you have a 24v vr6 shaved bay bbs new paint rolled fenders euro bumpers and your show worthy? lol

and sometimes first is a little tricky, you cant put it in first when your rolling, not even 5mph. trying putting it in second and then pushing up to first, if you didnt know that already but im assuming you did since the whole car is gutted pretty much.

    plans for now...

    get head rebuilt
    then major tune up.
    clean the interior some more.
i need 2 new front door handles.
the hatch is missing the lock. so i might shave the hatch and put the license plate in the bumper.
some body work.i need a new hood. the roof has some dents in it.
i would love to get a vr6 but my daily drive is an 85 Honda accord SEi thats almost on its last leg. so i bought this golf to replace it. im trying to get this going as fast as i can with out cutting to many corners.

I really dont think the PO knew what he was doing at all! as im taking stuff apart im see hoses that are duct taped on. bolts that are loss/missing. the shift linkage was loss so im guessing that's why it was not going into first that easily.

well the guy that was going to rebuild my head called me and told me that the quote that he gave me was wrong. and its not going to cost 150-300 but it was going to cost me 560. was that price to high? da faq. so i decided not to get it rebuilt from that guy. its all cleaned up and in pieces now.

painted the battery tray. just doing small stuff while i wait for time/money.

Trunk release switch wiring was fried......

looking like a car again. almost ready to start it. just waiting on some more parts!

i am having a wiring issue with the right side lights. the right tail light stays on all the time. the break light doesnt work and the front makers lights dont work. im having trouble finding the wiring harness on the fuse box to test it with a test light and track it down from there. anyone know where the harness is located?

  22. 10-29-2012 02:33 PM #22
I dont like to bump things but i really would like to know where the light harness plugs in the fuse box
