Thread: Sensor plug broke

  1. 05-03-2012 02:51 PM #1
Hey guys. I have a 2.0 16v running digi2 and there is a sensor on the head right behind the cam sprocket (basically) that the spade broke off so I have no way of plugging it back in. I tried to solder it but it just broke off again. I can't seem to find it anywhere in my Bentley and was wondering what sensor it is? Thanks.

    thats not very descriptive..

It's mounted on the engine head on top in back and next to the cam sprocket it has one wire that plugs into it. It gets bolted down with an Allen bolt.

Pictar? I can't think of any sensors bolted to the head near the timing gear, unless you have some kind of weird aftermarket VR sensor setup (which Digi 2 has no part of).

It's possible. The engine has vr6 injectors. Idk I'll have to get a pic of it and post it later.

Looks like radiator fan run-on switch. Lets the fan cool down the engine after you shut off car. Just replace it, it's not in the head, just on a bracket bolted to head correct?

  9. 05-05-2012 05:04 AM #10
Yes. That's correct. Now that u mention that I think that is the fan. I noticed it hasn't been turning on after car is off. Thank you very much.

Def is the fan run on. I turned off car and touched wire to ground and fan came on. Thanks again.

thats not the right spot for that sensor..

it should be AWAY from the exhaust manifold...

it shouldnt turn the fan on except on the HOTTEST of days.

i would mount it more towards the front of the engine, rather than the back.

Ok. I'll run the wire longer and remount it. I searched all over Germanautoparts and I can only find a coolant temp sensor with a single nail head style pin. Nowhere on there do I see a fan run on switch or anything. Do u know where I can order this?

On the 8v's it's back there mounted right over exhaust manifold. I've always run mine on the 16vs back there, actually I run mine on the distributer side of the head, on the back, even closer to the exhaust manifold than that. It comes on for a few minutes after I shut off the car if I've been driving it for awhile. I think it's great just to cool out the engine bay, and really what can it hurt?

I guess it could just drain the battery. Not sure if anything else could be bad with it. I kinda like mine where it is too It keeps the wire out of sight basically.

yah, I've had mine set up the way it is for years, never had an issue with battery drain, it just isn't on long enough. I guess if you had a real weak battery to begin with...

myself personally, i dont want ANYTHING to run after i take my key out of the ignition..

i dont understand why we need to cool the radiator, and engine bay after the engine is shut off?

i dont see it hurting anything, but really, i dont see it really helping either..

it must not have been that important, because only the digi cars got that sensor. my 86 doesnt have one, and its never had any issues at all..

Well the digi cars came later than your 86, so it could be argued that they saw a need and added it. 'Heat soak' comes to mind, after you shut off engine, all that heat soaks into everything around the bay like the starter and other components...It gets much hotter for a while than it would be if the car was running down the road with air circulating around the engine compartment. Most modern electric fan equipped cars have the ability to run-on the fan after the car is shut off, so at some point engineers said "Hey, maybe this is a good idea".

It's not that big of a deal either way, I just think it's a feature you might as well keep, it can only help things.
