Just announced over at Game Informer...

    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featur...ls-online.aspx

Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic's well-received Dark Age of Camelot. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

An in-depth look at everything from solo questing to public dungeons awaits in our enormous June cover story – as well as a peek at the player-driven PvP conflict that pits the three player factions against each other in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne itself.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled to come out in 2013 for both PC and Macintosh.

This has a chance at being the first MMORPG I get into. We'll see.

I just hope the gameplay follows the gameplay from past ES games. I think the biggest problem I have with MMOs is that they all seem to have the same kind of gameplay. Like a short-to-long cooldown after every attack.

    They finally announced it, huh?

I could step outside the building I am in right now and throw a rock through the window of the offices where they developed this game.

Should be pretty cool once it's out, if they keep the right feel.

It was just a matter of time, the super open worlds of Bethesda's games are really conducive to MMO style play.

If it is as good as Skyrim then they can have my money now. If it is only on PC then I will have to start saving for a gaming rig.

The more I read about this, the less excited I get. Apparently they will be throwing out the standard ES combat system and implementing a WoW'esque hotkey, static combat system. This thing reeks of WoW clone so far.

And just like that, I'm completely disinterested in the game.

I wonder how the game would do if it were some kind of Diablo-esque loot gathering RPG. Basically, think Borderlands, but with ES gameplay and story.

It's not being developed by Bethesda Softworks. It's being developed by the other subsidiary Zenimax Online Studios. They have a partnership with Simutronics to use the "Hero Engine". It's the same engine used for SWTOR.

So you can holster your well known Bethesda hatred for the moment.

Yeah, but look at how successful World of Warcraft is. Take the popularity of Elder Scrolls and add it to World of Warcraft - I'm sure they would have a hit. It obviously won't be to everyone's liking, but no game ever is.

Oh I'm in no way saying it won't be successful. Just saying that for those of us who aren't WoW fans, but are TES fans, this is looking pretty bleak already.

All we really want is a TES style game, with a larger, massive multiplayer world.

Yeah, I agree with you - it would be nice to see an online component.

I don't mmorpg, I don't facespace, I don't like you people. I won't play unless I can do it alone on my couch with a bottle of rum or wine (dependent if I'm slaying dragons or working on alchemy).

I don't care if they make an mmorpgwtf so long as it doesn't replace/prolong the next proper elder scrolls or fallout. Please note, I have noticed there hasn't been a KOTOR on the consoles this generation but we have jedi wow

frack social media, you make the assumption I enjoy mixing relaxation with other human beings.

I'm with Silly_me in that I have no social media accounts and I've never played an MMORPG. I was seriously considering Bioware's SWTOR as my first MMO but that looked like crap so I moved on. This now has my attention. We will see if it is as good as Skyrim.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. This is more of a spin-off than it replacing proper ES games. And KOTAR isn't much of a fair comparison since ES games have been Bethseda's only original and flagship franchise. I can't imagine they just go ahead and say it's now MMO-only.
