I'm on Comcast's network, still using the old Surfboard from my old apt with Cablevision over a decade ago. I'm also on a -G 54M wireless router that was given to me.

I looked on Comcast's site and one of the modem they suggest is a Surfboard SB6121

    http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB612...6090800&sr=1-1

So I started considering getting that and the router listed under- 'people also buy this'.

I see they also make other Surfboards that are higher numbers (newer and faster?) but Comcast doesn't list them. Would they work? Be faster? Worth the extra money?

Soo.. then I see Motorola also offer wireless cable modem gateways.. so these do both functions together?

    Ideas?

As you can tell, I know nothing about this stuff.. I had a friend set the wireless up for me.

    Thanks.
    -Josh

Get a Surfboard that will support the newest DOCSIS standard. The SB6121 is a good modem and will do as fast as Comcast can go for the next year at least in your area. I'd recommend a separate router since a modem and router together would have a higher likelyhood of totally putting you out of commission. At least if your router dies you could hook a PC to the modem.

Cisco Linksys is the typical recommendation. Anything new should suffice fine for what you are looking to do. I had a WRT54G for 3 years and it couldn't push more than 20mbps... Once I swapped it out I could burst up to 38mbps (I have an upgraded plan).

just picked up a e4200 v2 - which has helped our wireless network at home. Our old wrt54g was getting bogged down(almost 8 years); between streaming (nas, boxee, atv, etc), phones, laptops - the dual band is very nice. (laptops on 300Mb/s+) I'd stay away from the integrated units as well.

I'll throw in my opinion of the surfboard as well. Great cable modem.

I'm partial to Belkin wireless routers. I've had the WRT-54g with DD-WRT, a D-link DI-624, some other various routers including netgear, and cheapies.

The belkins just seem to work the best. They are impossibly easy to configure (truthfully they are all equally easy), but I've never had a belkin "die" on me. After time I've had my Linksys just quit, and a netgear, and 2 D-Link.

I have a Belkin 802.11b router that cost $11 after Mail-in-Rebate my friend bought. He used it for years, and when I finally convinced him to go "n" he gave it to me. I've used it off and on when my other routers died. This last router I bought was a belkin, because this little thing impressed me so much, and I'll be continuing to use them.

Make sure to get a modem supported by comcast or they will not have the config files on their TFTP server for your modem (even though TECHNICALLY it could work).

Check HERE for the modem list. Check the box that says to show only DOCSIS 3.0 modems.

I would look for a DOCSIS 3 modem that supports 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream. That's the current best that you can get.

Get a separate modem and router. The combo ones generally don't have as many features and can limit your setup options in many cases, and generally they suck.

Motorola SB6121 SURFboard® eXtreme Cable Modem is what I will be getting from Radioshack. Tigerdirect has this for the same sale price that Radioshack is selling it. But it is only on sale for Sale valid until: 05/19/12 $89.99 Now onto looking at getting a good router.
