I have an obd1 '95 passat glx, A/T, just turned 200k. Over this past winter, it started to cold idle very low, around 3-400rpm. I have to nurse it to get it to stay running, then even move VERY delicately getting out to keep it running and let it warm up. I cleaned the TB and checked the maf after searching for that problem, with no improvement. Just dealt with it. It ran ok after it warmed up. Yesterday, it started the same way, then about 5-10 minutes later, it started to cut out. Happened at about 35 mph, light load. Had about 1/4 tank in it. Stopped and put another 5 gal of 93 in and started my 40 mile trip home. If I leave the trans in D, it will drive OK until it shifts into 4th, then start bucking like crazy. I left it in 3, and drove home easy. As I hit the section where I have to climb, even 3rd started to hesitate. Not as violent, but still not right.

I spent my day searching here, testing what I can, and still not finding it. The following has been done and tried-
    fuel filter today
seafoamed the intake mani (seems to have improved the idle)
cleaned the MAF in denatured alcohol
ran it with o2 sensor unplugged
    ran it with tps unplugged
coilpack is swapped GM GNX unit last fall w/ new wires. Verified today, and all seems fine. firing on all cylinders, at least while idling, and revving in neutral.
checked fuel pressure at rail- holds good at around 50 weather driving or idling.
    cleaned TB

Nothing has created any change whatsoever. It starts fine, runs ok upon starting out, shifts through 2nd fine, then starts to shudder ever so slightly in third. Upon shifting into 4th, all hell breaks loose, and it bucks like mad.
I'm beginning to get angry! I need this thing driveable. I have serious regrets for having gotten rid of my MK2 for this POS!

For the random hesitation/bucking at around 2000 RPM on VR6/SLC try disconnecting the N18/EGR Frequency valve and then try to replicate the problem. It will light the CEL but solve the drivability problem until you can source a replacement.

Check the throttle body tube. It could be lose, or have a hole in it allow too much air. I recently had the bucking problem, and that was the culprit. GL.

Had this issue a few years back, i had some really nasty grounds under my battery tray. check ALL grounds, any intermittent ground could basicly be letting your car stall and refire each time while your cruising.

il almost bet grounds are your issue if youve checked all that other stuff, i fought for months dealing with this till finally i checked all my grounds, and found massive issues. make sure all the connections are 100% clean, no rust

    goodluck
