Ok, This week my '88 Fox started acting up a bit. I would shift into 4th and noticed that it didn't always engage. It felt like the shifter slipped in as normal, but no gear mesh. If I held the shifter back and let out on the clutch slowly, I could feel everything mesh and all was normal. Now, I just skip 4th and go from 3rd to 5th.
Could this be just an adjustment, worn bushings? What is the best way to check it out?
I have a parts Fox out back, the shifter was disconnected when I bought it, but I am pretty sure it is also a 5-speed. How do I identify the type of transmission? Where exactly are the markings at? I looked in my Bentley, but the picture wasn't real clear.
check the shift cluster that holds all the bushings is not loose i hade the same problem that little 13mm bolt and nut that holds it all together. it came lose and i kept missing gears and poping out of gears. i just lock tight mine never the problem again
Thank you VwTurboFox, I checked that out tonight. The bolt was tight, but I think it is loose bushings. It appeared that the lever didn't push far enough forward, so I adjusted the linkage a hair on the spline shaft. I test drove it, at first it appeared to be better.
Under a steady acceleration 3rd to 4th stayed in gear and shifted normally. Downshifting was a different story, 5th to 4th did not engage at all. Slow acceleration, 3rd to 4th did not grab either.
I will search out the list of bushings on here and order them soon.
im not one to give bad news but do you think maybe your tranny is just really worn out.
i have had a five speed before in my fox and the tranny was bad but still drivable.
anyways good luck hope it's just a simple fix for you
