Only advice i have is the square plastic slides into a rubber tube that pulls off the cable.
Rubber and end could be swapped from one cable to another,..
if you have a spare cable that won't fit your ap.

Is the problem the cable or the gear? If it is the cable, I might have one on a parts Cabriolet. If it's any good, I'd let it go for little more than the price of shipping

You might be able to pull the plastic part out,
    flip it over
    and shove it back in.
    Maybe.
Let us know if it works.

    hrrmmmm nylon....
    ahhh yes those are factory
most aftermarket speedo cables are now form fit metal (basically squashed cable) to fit the square holes

my 81 has the nylon type....

Man this has been a bitch. Just pulled apart 4 cars at the junk yard. None of them had this part. Tried to buy a cable and they all were some weird combinations like clip in backs and stuff

Go to hobbylobby or a good hardware store that has a selection of 'hobby' brass tubing and look for a piece that has a similar cross section. Alternatively, get a nylon fastener or bolt and use a dremel or small black plane or similar tool and square it up. It would probably take all of 15 minutes...

Did you try pulling the plastic piece and flipping it, like I suggested?
    Just testing my invisibility.

It seems likely that my cloak of invisibilty is still firmly intact,
but it's possible he stopped postiing because it worked great and he no longer needs us.

orr it was such a simple fix
well maybe he's just too embarrased to come back and post letting us all know how easily it worked.

I had a similar problem yesterday, screwed the speedo cable on and still didn't have a speedometer.
Unscrewed it to find the plastic, square peg missing.
I pulled one out of another (with my fingers, no special tools, ha)
flipped it for fun and shoved it into the cable of the '84 Rabbit project.
    Taa daa speedometer/odometer.
Something else I'll need to keep a spare of and remember where I put it, ha.
Oh well, a square peg doesn't take up much room.
