Thread: German engineering making me very mad (Locks not working)

  1. 05-04-2012 07:06 PM #1
So this is the series of events today, decided today I would change my bulb. I do so, no lights work. Okay odd. Restart my car move it around fiddle with the fires on the light assembly works again OK great. NOW! My locks don't work right, nor do my key fobs. I tried to reprogram them but hitting the unlock doesn't do anything. My hatch is always unlocked now. If I hit the lock button on the door they just reopen. So I have to push the passenger side down manually. Then manually hold the driver side key in for a few seconds to make sure it stays locked. With only 60k on it I have to say this car is really disappointing me the last 10,000 miles.

Is there a way to see if there was like a surge and see if a breaker went? I have no idea.

Check all your fuses. After that disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery first, then the positive side, and touch the two cable ends together for a few seconds. That will electronically reset your car. Hook the battery back up and let us know what happens.

What am I looking for in my fuses? Or how will I know if something is wrong? I've never had a car with an electrical issue.

If I disconnect the negative wire from the battery first, should I reattach it first? I don't want to mess things up more.

Umm, you look for bad fuses??

No, reconnect positive first, then negative.

granted, Cpl months back my car stopped dinging when the door was open and lights were still on, anything related you guys think? I figured the speaker just died.

This is not my fuse nor have I found a burnt out one. But for reference if anyone hasn't
    looked for one before:

I'm wondering if it's a door close sensor that went bad. There are features built in to prevent you from locking your keys in your car.

edit: if it was a door close sensor you'd probably have a dash light. also your car wouldn't honk the horn when locking it using the key fob.

    You're close.

Now that he gave us some more information that should have been disclosed in the original post, I think I can say it's likely a Door Lock Control Module... It's a common MK4 ailment:

Would this be why my windows no longer open or close?

You know on the passenger side of the car the rear lighting area is that white light, on the inside of the when I was putting the lights back in they hit it and the light went off. I thought it was odd, would that lighting assembly touching the other white light electric thing possibly cause a short?

    FIXED!!!!!!!!!
So my windows, locks ect all work again. (not the door chime though) think the speaker or whatever is dead.

The cause: #14 Fuse, it's sunny outside so took advantage pulled up a step-stool and went through them all. I found that #14 was zapped, my manual does not indicate all that it does and the picture on the door of the fusebox is umm like a sorta light sun thing? So I replaced it and immediately heard my hatch lock make a noise and was like woooooo! Thanks for the help guys, glad I didn't rip my door apart.

p.s. Where's a cheap place to get a cabin filter in Canada? I have a feeling its going to be a whore to install.

Yes, the door chime doesn't work probably because of the links I posted above... If you're chime doesn't work, the interior lights don't come one when a door is opened, then it has to do with the links I posted.

Dealership. The cabin filter is cheap. You only need to remove 4 screws from the rain tray. Search for a simple DIY.
