No believe me its okay, im not 'one of those kids' I crashed my jetta back in january...woopie, but bought the passat and have been consumed in every way by it. Im 17 years old and do deliveries so im on a pretty tight budget. When i bought it, for 250.00, basically the only thing it did was run, barely. It had been sitting for a little over two years, the brakes were like one solid chunk of rust, sunroof leaked anddidnt work, the rear driver was wide open with a lovely blue tarp 'covering' it. But I decided to jump into it. Ive been hunting through this forum and its seems like there isnt a whole lot going on. From what I can tell, Izzo is boss and doesnt like low vehicles, so sorry if you dont like. Anywho, this is basically my build over the past few months, for some reason there are quite a few pictures I cannot find so if it appears as if there are gaps in the build, I apologize. So, here we go... And sorry about the huge pictures.
Started tearing the front end apart, Both wheel bearings were destroyed, Tie rod ends and ball joints ripped, bad CV boot, seized struts, the works.
I picked up some used coilovers, front two were used, backs were BNIB. The kid could not have possibly run them any more incorrectly and insisted that they were impossible to use. he had no strut bearing and had them spun really low with the helper springs, some people should not be allowed to work on their cars.
He game me this though
The driver side strut was a three day project trying to take out.
So I went to town
All Cleaned up and never seized
Organization at its finest
Could not physically separate the tie rod and tie rod end on the passenger side. So I replaced the whole assembly which cost me like 130 bucks. oh well, Made aligning it much easier.
All put back together, all in all took about a month to get the thing on the road. This was the first test fit. The camber was set way too far out and i took a chunk out of my tires with the fenders, had to do some 'fender rolling' (with a nice wooden baseball bat and hammer) and kick the camber in. Actually really like how the wheels fit. They need to be spaced out in the back but I have new wheels I am refinishing now.
Spun them down a little more to get this
Car is in really good shape other than that dent you can see in the last picture, no rust which is surprising for a New England car left to sit.
Like I said, windows and sunroof leak really bad so I pulled out the Seats and some carpet pad to steam clean it. Bought some mk3 gti leathers for the front and b4 passat ones for the back. Couldnt find any pics with them in
Grabbed a new sunroof and broke my headliner
Cleaned up the headlights, got two new unbroken fog lights for twenty bucks too, hella oem, not pictured until later though.
But then the clutch decided to go. At first I replaced the slave cylinder, only for it to go bad, so I threw another one in and realized it was the clutch so out came the transmission. Took about two and a half hours to get out. real PITA. This is where some of the pictures got lost. Went with the stock sachs clutch disk and a stage 2 spec pressure plate, slightly used. Then I spent close to 17 hours trying, multiple different ways to get the transmission back into the car. Literally got it centimeters away but couldnt properly line it up. Gave up and ripped the front end off and pulled the motor out. The tranny bolted to it in maybe 7 minutes. Had so many plans while the motor was out but just decided to put it back in. I have a 2.9 intake but the throttle body is set straight back rather than the stock one set off to left. Too much SAI/ emission nonsense to put it in. Oh well. Motor went back in and when I fired it up it was making an awefully scary noise. Apparently when I was wrestling the transmission in, I dented the gearbox cover just enough so something was rubbing inside. banged it out and everything turned out to be good. the stage 2 pressure plate bites hard but engages very close to the floor. Oh well.
Inside of that cover
I tried out the VR lip but I ripped it off way too many times and just went back to normal.
Took some pictures with my buddies mk4
Background of my computer, god I love this picture
Currently, Roof rack is temporary, my friend let me borrow it for dustoff, I told him id give it back when he got his mk2 coupe back up and running, so Ill have it basically for the next hundred or so years.
I welded up a new exhaust. Just running a cat and borla muffler. I still have to make the cutout in the bumper so it looks really ghetto.
I ground through my oil pan so I got another one tested my welding abilities....
Came out nice, no leaks, 3/16 inch steel=broken concrete. haha.
that little guy is no longer with us.
I know you guys will hate me for this, but Ive always liked them and got a good deal. Also have perfect tires to stretch over them. 16x9.5 all around. tires 205/45/16. In the process of refinishing them.
My most recent problem was a blown out brake line. I replaced the line and couldnt get them to hold pressure so I pulled out the old master cylinder and one should be here on monday. I do not like not having my car. Oh well, what do you expect from a 250 dollar car.
I will try to keep this thread updated as much as possible.
I do have a question as to why my passenger window just goes down when it wants to. Ill roll it up and it will go right back down, Im asuming a bad ground? I can hear the motor (window) click sometimes when I push the brake or turn the lights on. I know these cars are famous for aweful windows and door latches. Any insight on anything is appreciated. Thanks
