Thread: Where do you buy tires at for 2002 Cabrio? (Searched but it looks like most people upgraded their rims)

  1. 05-04-2012 11:46 PM #1
(I searched the forum but every post I saw people upgraded their rim size to something larger and those tires are not available for a 2002 GLS)

My GF is shipping her 2002 Cabrio in from her home town. There doesn't seem to be much of a market for tires this small. Perhaps, I'll have to get her larger rims later but right now something all season should get us through the Northern VA weather.

Any suggestions on which tires to stay away from or which tires you have had success in a climate with various types of weather?

Thanks a lot. Is there a specific area of the of this forum that deals with tires/engines? Seems like all Cabrio info is stored in this one area.

good call you can order them from samsclub as well (no shipping cost)

Another option is going to 185/65/14 a much more common tire. Sams has a michelin x radial that is more of a touring tire but it has 80,000 mile warranty in that size. vs i think 45,000 with the exalto's. If you're planning on bombing around corners and such go with the exalto's but if you're just casual driving the xradials have been good for me i've had them on a civic, gti, odyssey and a crv and they have always been great.

Ive had the exalto's on a TL and those are great tires aswell

Thank you all for your replies. This car will be used on the weekends for short trips around the area most likely we will be using my car for any long distance driving or heading into D.C. (Live in the Alexandria area)

I was tryig to avoid tirerack.com but it looks like the best option.

Tirerack.com usually beats you up in shipping (at least in my shopping experiences....and I work for FedEx !! ), check out http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.do .....also if you shop Sears they have some good sales periodically and price match (which they don't tell you)....I'm not sure of local shops for you down that way since I'm about an hour northeast of Winchester Va.

Almost anything mail order will beat you up a bit on shipping. I've never had all that much problem with shipping rates from TireRack, but it still ends up being about the same as buying tires locally.

As for what to buy, I check out TireRack and read the reviews and such, even if I don't buy from them in the end, it's a good resource. If you aren't going to drive the car too much don't go for something with a stupid high treadwear rating/warranty (60K-80Kmi). Chances are good you're wasting your $$ and they will get hard and start to crack before they're used up. Plus they aren't as fun to drive on!

And, yes, sadly the 195/60R14 is becoming a hard tire to find.

Thank you all very much. I forgot sears sells tires. It looks like they have a pretty good selection and it's about the same price.

First VW, I'll be helping her maintain. A few of my buddies have new (2011 and 2012) VW GTI's and have experienced some electrical problems. Lately, I have been using this site to increase my knowledge of this Cabrio.
