Isn't it crazy to look back 40 years ago and try to comprehend how people couldn't be bothered to put on seatbelts? Bodies flying everywhere!

It looks like there were major differences in suspension design back then. Some cars flip over simply from sliding sideways while the Porsches just slide.

That video perhaps sums up the 70's wholly. I know most of you weren't even alive then, but in those days there was a simplistic "anything goes" mentality that threaded through the culture, and cars were no different. There weren't even drunk driving laws to speak of. The very idea of wearing a seatbelt simply never entered the conscious mind. It was an interesting time, that's for sure.

Moral of the story: Porsches and BMWs of the 70s had had superior suspension and handling compared to other cars of the same period.

Plenty of the cars that rolled in that video, had rear engine and swing-axle suspension. VW's that were more than a couple of years old at the time of that video, Renault 8 and 10, NSU Prinz, Fiat 850 all used that arrangement. And the early Corvair, of course (although none of those were in the video - but they used the same drivetrain and suspension layout), and we all know where that one went.

Wow. Modern car safety is like a needle exchange program. They're still going to do it, just keep them from killing themselves while they do it.

Whilst on vacation somewhere early 70's /end sixties my family also took a drive around the ring in our fiat 1600....my oldest brother who was given the drivers seat did , as the family legend goes, get the fiat on 2 wheels in a corner....wich prompted my father to urge my brother to slow down a bit..
Seeing this vid made me realise that i actually must be happy that i still have a family after that little drive at the Nurburgring.
I wasn't in the car that day, in case you wonder...
Just some old american footage with some nice Fervid music
