Are mk1 gas tanks baffled? I am just wondering because I have an 84 GTi with a 1.8L JH and I keep getting a lot of hesitation when I am going uphill and the tank isn't full.

No baffles, just a small sump type of thing with a screen in it. You might check it to see if it is sealed and holding pressure or that the tube from the sump to the outlet is not perforated.

Would these be internal on the tank or should I be able to check this out with a floor jack? The reason I am asking is because I am traveling and really don't have time to take it to a shop.

Then how do you check them?

By removing the fuel sender, then you can remove the screen and perform a visual on the tube, as I don't know of any adults with hands small enough to reach the tube, w/o cutting on the tank.
