I have a 98 Jetta GL. Recently, I swapped out the leaky factory tail lights out for some smoked ones off a GLX. Suddenly the left turn signal blinks/ticks twice as fast as the right. I previously had a 97 Jetta Trek which also had the different turn signals. Was there a point to this? I'm assuming it's an intentional design. I find the ticking really distracting. How to revert?

Make sure that you have properly connected the plugs to the bulb trays, and check for a burned out bulb(s).
Those things are your most likely culprits.

Mostly likely a bad bulb needs replaced. Turn your hazards on and check to see which one of your blinkers doesn't blink.
