I didn't know it could be done from a CD... I thought it was just from the SD card reader.

You don't need HD at all. The monitor does not support HD anyway.

I think he refers to the hard drive.
HD = hard drive of the RNS-510

I think the HD can only support .wma or .wav files.

Put whatever music you want on an SD card and insert it into the little slot under the screen. I've loaded several albums and the tagging for the songs works perfectly when loaded.

The "extras" menu on screen has HDD capacity, select that and it brings up the menu for you to load.

just for clarification: you RIP cds to the HDD, not burn them to the hd. just the wrong terminology, small gripe. no big deal.

and yeah it looks like another vw oversight, no direct ripping from the cd, like ford i believe does, and others.

i just use the sd slot and i have a 16gb sd with my entire album collection loaded onto it. i don't even use the hdd in the unit whatsoever, the sd loads just as fast. and again, you have to do this on your pc; the rns-510 doesn't rip cds whatsoever as far as i know.

According to my sales rep, you are supposed to be able to rip CD's directly to the HDD, but I am clueless as well. That is one of the reasons I am on today. I am also trying to figure out how to tag songs on my iPhone 4S, which doesn't seem to work for me either. I will say that this audio system and it's manual are not very user friendly. I know more than the average bear when it comes to electronics and computers, but this thing has me stumped.

You'll need a different MDI cable other than the one that came with the car for the tagging with Iphone. -----I also agree that the sales rep was wrong on the CD rip

You are able to copy songs from a CD to HDD...

Put your CD in and then press the Selection button and you should see a menu button next to the name of the song after pressing the Selection button:

Then press Copy when the Options tab comes up:

Then you should be able to copy the song or the folder to the HDD

This is a bummer... The options button doesn't come up. Maybe it has to be in mp3 format

I just copied a bunch of my favorite songs to the HDD. Even though I have my iPod connected with the cable in the armrest, it's nice having ah 18 gb HDD as an additional media option

I have an early RNS510 but I'm pretty sure it's still the same on the newest version. You cannot rip songs from a music CD to the HDD. THe pics show moving .mp3 files loaded on a CD to the HDD. This is like moving mp3 on a SD to the HDD.

For those who use the HDD I have a question on speed.

So far I've been only using my iPod through the MDI and every now and then bluetooth streaming. How fast does the HDD find, load and play music compared to the iPod set up? I find that sometimes it takes some extra time because I have so much music on my iPod, and I was wondering if the hard drive makes it seamless.

I would say seamless, though I don't have an iPod to compare it to. I use an Android phone and it is a bit quicker via the HDD. I run with MIX on so I don't know how that works. Does it generate a random track number and play it? Does it keep track of some number of past tracks played? I have just a few songs on the HDD (800) so I don't know if the size of the playlist is also a factor.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but correct me if I'm wrong:

The RNS510 - the control unit with Navigation and thus ability to have the RVC camera, and HDD is the only touch interface system that has the ability to play DVDs?

I'm severely regretting not getting the Navigation due to the RVC compatibility and didn't even know it was capable of downloading songs... Thanks a lot sales guy. Here I was thinking it was only Navigation..and who needs Nav when you have a phone dock with constantly updated Google Maps
