Well I replaced the timing belt, water pump, thermostat etc today and have a couple of questions afterwards.

Bought the car used from a dealership. It had a boost gauge in it that spiked to upwards of 30 psi and I stupidly thought the gauge was messed up since k04's are supposed to peak at 14 or so stock.

Well low and behold, after running vag com, I really was running that much boost. Found the manual boost controller and disconnected it, boost went down to 25. At this point I felt it was safe to assume it was chipped. Just having a hard time figuring out which one it is.

Also, unfortunately I couldn't get any g12 prior to the job... Is auto zone coolant ok for 400 miles? I have to drive back home before I can change it.

I also had to add some power steering fluid cause the reservoir kept tipping over while working on the TB. I added the yellow bottle from auto zone that said "for most foreign cars." Will this be ok for 400 miles as well?

After doing some pulls vag com showed I can advance my timing much more. Excited to get water/meth, fmic, turbo back exhaust and really see what this car can push out of the k04.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

    hello !
first NOOOOO Dont put that crap in your coolant. get g12 or park it. that sh!t will destroy your aluminum engine. that crap is made for crappy engines. the power steering fluid im not sure of . but i WOULD NOT use it. get a hold of some oem approved stuff.. fluids you cant phuck about. you have to use the approved stuff. maybe im An-al maybe im weird. but im fussy about this kinda crap. all the oils and fluids i use oem or oem equivalant only.. if you put any bad crap in . id get it changed right away. just my 2 cents. and my opinion. im scared to even put in regualar gasoline.

Yikes. Guess I'll try my best to get it done before the trip. And no worries, I always put in premium gas I am generally very on point about doing everything right, however I was in a time crunch to do the TB and couldn't get my hands on G12.Glad I did it this soon, there was some serious fraying on the sides.

As long as you aren't mixing G12 with regular coolant, you'll be fine. You can run the non pink stuff you get anywhere as long as the system is clean when you add it. And no harm will come from this, as plenty of people have gotten tired of overpaying for OEM coolant. Big Black Titty is a little paranoid.

Glad to hear it. I plan on being robbed by the OEM coolant once I get back to Dallas. Any tips on the chip? I tried the startup for giac and another one (forgot the name), but didn't consider the possibility that the PO had it password protected.

I don't know if it is internet rumor or truth as i've never tested it, but mixing is "supposed" to cause G12 to gel. And since there is no f'n easy way to get ALL the G12 out...get the system clean in the driveway...that's a gamble I'm not ready to take. If some one has actually tried this, or routinely uses non G12, please speak up.

Personnally, if I were low I'd add distilled water ($0.97 gallon at walmart) or wait until my local audi, vw, napa, dealer opened and buy G12 before adding the non-pink stuff.

    Sometimes paranoia is good.

    cheers

I heard the same. What's one less hour of studying gonna do anyways, right? Guess I'm going to run about 10 gallons or so of distilled water through the system until I'm only getting clear water coming out, and then I will add the 50/50 mixture. Is the 50/50 in reference to weight or volume?

Concerning the chip I doubt you're going to figure out what brand you have.

30psi with a stock turbo and pump gas and no water or meth injection seems not possible without serious misfire/knock/general heat issues. Are you sure there's a stock turbo under that hood?

Doug, I was starting to consider that possibility. (when it came to timing) it seemed to be tuned conservatively. Buddy with the vag com said I had much more room to play with. I guess I never considered it since it is still running on SMIC. Figured with a new/bigger turbo a FMIC would have come along as well.

As to the chip, that is unfortunate. One of my friends helping with the TB install had a nasty launch control/2 step on his GTI.

    Volume.

I replaced the VW approved stuff in my Corrado (when I had it) with the cheaper stuff and never had any problems. The key is to flush the heck out of the system before swapping them out.
Never underestimate the stopping power of a tree.

i dont know about this non g12 stuff... the cheap crap has chemicals in it, that destroy aluminum head engines. and have heard horror stories about cheap crap from the local car shops. in europe they have good stuff thats approved for our cars at the local gas station... kinda sad .

i never run that crap. i like to avoid problems. family member used cheap crap in his coolant once on his e46 bmw . and within a few days of adding it. the coolant turned to, it wasnt like a gel. but it looked like the same texture that you have in orange juice with lots of pulp. it destroyed his hoses so they leaked. and e46 were notorious for upper and lower coolant hose failure and reservoir tank failure at like 60k miles. which he had done maybe 15k miles before hand . plus he had a whole bunch of other little engine problems. right after he added the crap. some of them might have been because of the coolant, but not 100% sure. his rad had to be replaced 8k miles after this problem though too.. so i wouldnt risk it.

i like to have a little bit of every oil and fluid on hand just incase. and yes im paranoid. i also wear a tinfoil hat... you never know whos listening.

Dued, that's not paranoia, that's just common sense.

You could always take your car down to Dubsquared in Arlington whenever it is convenient for you...just make sure you call in for an appointment first, they are always busy. Great diagnostic and service work, though.

You guys scared me straight. Just flushed it with 8 gallons of distilled water and refilled it with the mix. Thankfully it hadn't gelled or gummed up when it was flushed.
