I have a 92 GTI 16V and I took the timing belt off the pulley to check out an oil leak. Unfortunately, the pulley turned forward slightly and I don't dare to start it thinking I might cause damage to the head. I was told there are markings that have to line up on the pulley and the flywheel, but I am not sure. Any suggestions?

Did you line up the engine to TDC before taking off the timing belt? I've never had the pleasure of working with a 16v, but if you didn't line it up, I'm guessing you'll have to turn the block and head simultaneously to TDC before reinstalling the timing belt. Other (safer) option would be to take off the head, then set both head and block to TDC and reinstalling.

It's an interference motor, so turning one without the other will bend valves.

Not Sure if it was TDC when I took the belt off. But I guess thats what I'm trying to figure out. How to set TDC and The flyweel. I havent tried turning the car over at all.
