Thread: Another guess the damage! unintended range rover offroading content.

  1. 05-07-2012 06:10 PM #1
So my friend messed up his 2007 range rover sport yesterday. A slick onramp, and too much speed had him go over a curb at around 45mph. Car has about 45k on it, in perfect condition beforehand. Curb was about six inches high.

Visible damage so far is 3 tires, 3 wheels, front control arm, probably air spring, maybe axle, and front fender. Front bumper is also loose, but i don't think it will need replaced. Engine seems fine, and from what i could see it didn't seem like there was any fluids leaking, but one tow truck driver said it looked like it was leaking transmission fluid. I guess the MFD display said "transmission fault" or something like that, but i am assuming that could easily be from axle not attached, or busted. It wouldnt move or drive after it hit. I looked under it as best i could and couldn't see any transmission carnage underneath, but I could be wrong.

Chances are he screwed that air suspension up.

    I'm guessing north of 10k.

if the tow truck operator saw the tranny and there is damage.... +$6000.00 (conservatively) i'd guess. just for a replacement tranny plus install... either way its not going to be cheap... you gonna get....

hahaha, well he has good insurance, so he's not too worried.

I looked up some parts online and was actually pretty surprised about costs. It looked like a rebuilt transmission is $3800, Axle is $100, control arm is $140, airpsring is $500,
tires are anywhere from $210-500 / tire, wheels look like $400-600.

prices I quoted here are from rockauto, tirerack, and http://www.roverlandparts.com

I used to be an insurance adjuster, even if this thing had $20K in damage it is still not a total loss. Had a rock the size of a grape fruit come off a landscaping truck, bounce off the hood and smash the winshield on my old '01 SL500 R129, when the rock smashed the windshield at 68 mph glass exploded and pitted the paint on almost the entire car.

2/3 of the entire car and hard top had to be re-sprayed, both driver and passenger seats, plus the center console, leather on roll bar, had to be replaced. was $15k in damage back in 2009 and my insurance company did not total it because for some reson it still had an insane amount of value on it.

    j/k...

Did he get zee police accident report?
    Sober?

Does he have full coverage insurance?

I suspect he gonna need it.

Looking at the pic.. that rain seems light.
If it hadn't rained for a while, even a very light rain makes the road very slick as it brings up the oils dropped by vehicles.
    Lesson learned (hopefully).

oh of course. it needs at least 75% of book value or irreparable damage (such as frame or chassis) to be totaled.

the book on this car is at least $45k. so you'd have to do about 32k worth of damage (ball park numbers here)

Don't forget that some states allow diminished value insurance claims... so that also adds to the total repair costs.
An impact bad enough to do damage all four wheels could easily do frame damage.

FWIW- I went "unexpected off roading" after "unexpected flying" twice in my 90 323, bent a wheel back and split a tire the second time when I hit a barn foundation (hidden in a dump), and was able to drive it 20 miles home (both time).

One disadvantage of modern computer design is we lost all of the "when in doubt make it stout" unexpected durability that many vehicles had.

My brother had a 2005 RR Sport. It's not the price of parts thats expensive, its the labor for it. He had to get the transfer case fixed (under warrenty thank goodness), and that was close to 10k on its own. If there is tranny damage then most likely will have AWD transfer case damage. Wheels + tires = 6k, suspension 2500, tranny 5k, 4x4 system 10k, body panels and respray... Im gonna say around 22k.

On a related note of "which is the king of off-road" a buddy of mine had a tie-rod end come loose while taking an off ramp. Didn't turn, went straight and caught some sweet air off the ~6ft drop and duffed it in the grass. Only casualty was a bent leaf spring. Had it towed to my place and we got it back on the road with a new tie rod end and leaf that night.

yup! and it was actually much less than I thought.

Originally it was $6500, but they found a few other issues, and then found they had to replace the other two wheels, one more tire, and some misc stuff. All in all its ending up to be $8500. Not bad considering how hit hit the curb. I got to look under the car when it was on the lift, and I see why the damage wasn't that bad.

All of the critical components of the car like the oil pans, transmission, transfer case, etc are all well up within the unibody's integrated frame rails. even the subframe kind of rests within the rails and not on it. The drivers corner took a sufficient hit to raise the rest of the car up, and "glide" it over the curb without even leaving scrapes on the frame rails. Now obviously everything on that corner was toast, but that was about it. The shop said the "transmission fault" probably came on because there was no traction on either end of the car, and with the axle snapped, all the sensors were gone too.
