so I found a mk6 scirocco steering wheel with no controls for 300$ with an airbag. This is what it looks like. Im not familiar with steering wheel swaps. Im pretty sure this would fit my mk6 golf but would I need anything? or is it a straight simple bolt on swap? Should I use the included airbag or use the airbag that came with the car? And is this something I can do? or take it to a shop?

That looks exactly the same as the GTI steering wheel, but without the red stitching.

No idea if it will fit. Just because it looks like it will, doesn't mean it will. The wheel itself could have a different attachment "bracket" and the air bag might have different connector styles.

    It might though.

I would use the airbag that came with it. There is a chance the Scirocco wheel and airbag are made by different suppliers, and that's not something you want coming off. The airbags themselves are certainly different inside since in europe there is no unbelted requirement, so it will be a softer bag.

hmm well it looks like the airbag is the same shape idk. All the recent VW's seem to have that same center airbag.

I think he means the actual air bag, it might just be a single stage as opposed to a 2 stage bag like us cars have.

if that happens to be the case can't I just use my original airbag? More than likely they mount the same.

The wheel will certainly mount up. It is a 12mm triple-square (or T55 torx) bolt that holds the actual wheel to the splined steering shaft. VW has been using this same system since at least the MK4's. The issue your looking at is if the airbag will fit/work. My bet is it 'should'. If it doesn't you can use your current airbag as the 2.5 and the GTI use the same shape airbag.

So long as you aren't adding or deleting buttons or paddles then I would foresee no issues (But also disown any liability for bad advice ). This comes from my experience of swapping out my stock TDI wheel to a scirocco/R20 wheel (GTI-style w/buttons, but grey stitching). I had ZERO issues between the two, but I know your situation is a little different.

It's something you can easily do yourself so long as you have the correct bit and a torque wrench, PM me if you need in depth instructions

Thank you very much. Definitely very helpful for me. I do have a 12 bit triple square and a cheap torque wrench I can use. Im just a little worried handling the airbag and harness. Oh and 300$ is a pretty good deal? I have no experience with steering wheel prices. But I figured it would be a nice upgrade since the base 2.5 wheel is really crappy. I like the flat bottom and inserts for your hands as well as the silver accents.

For prices, I think I paid ~$425 for mine w/bag, sold my old one for $250 w/bag. And since I would put that one between mine (GTD w/buttons) and my old one (TDI w/buttons) then I would say that's a good price. Just be careful because airbags can NOT be shipped by air (Classified as explosive by the FAA)

I agree that it should fit. I would absolutely, positively use your airbag. Then bolt the other one to your old wheel and sell them to recover some of your money! Don't be scared of handling the airbag components. Just make sure you don't turn the key on with the bag unplugged as you will most likely set an SRS code that will have to be cleared. Will the horn work??? I would have the seller send you a picture of the back of this set up so you can see the connectors and compare them to your's.
Good point about shipping them, I forgot that they were classified as explosives until you mentioned that.

Great, let us know how the install goes. Can you post the part number please? I have a base golf wheel as well and if this works for you i might look into getting one.
