I recently taught my oldest son how to ride a bike, taught him on a bike that is too small for him, but I had read somewhere that using a small bike can help kids learn. Now, with his 7th birthday coming up next month I want to get him his 1st proper bike.

I took him to Toys R Us, and had him try some 20" bikes out. He found one that fits him nicely, some of the BMX he did not like as he felt stretched out/leaned too far forward. The one he likes is a mountain bike of some random name.

My problem is that I know how most big box store bikes are (heavy, cheap, etc) and so I am not entirely sure what to do. Realistically speaking the budget for his bike is $100-$150, which does not leave many new options. I don't really want to spend a huge amount, as he grows like a weed, and will outgrow it. I am looking on eBay at Specialized Hotrocks, but there are not many available, and I don't know what other options are out there.

Having said all that, any advice? any bikes worth looking at? I don't really mind buying used as long as it's a decent bike. Already checked classifieds at mtbr.com etc but as can be expected, not a whole lot of kids bikes in the classifieds there.

      Thanks.

Craigslist is your friend this case.

I'd suggest going with well-known brands such as Giant, like this one:

      http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...20/8921/48640/

      or

      Trek

      http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/kids/models

You know that it's going to be a quality piece of kit, as opposed to mostly rubbish from places like Toys'R'us and K-mart.

Also, ask around your office and in many cases there'll be someone with kids who no longer ride a mountain bike.

I am in the same boat as you are by the way. My son who just turned 8 is fairly small and has massive issues riding his BMX and I was thinking about selling that and getting him something that has gears so he can spin it a lot easier.

Alot of reputable BMX companies make 16 and 18in BMX bikes. However they are not going to fall within your budget. My suggestion is check CL and/or any 2nd hand shops in your area.

So far not having a whole lot of luck finding anything on CL. Annoyingly I have found plenty of decent bikes on CL, but they are too far away and sellers are unwilling to ship (understandable). Found a nice Specialized Hotrock and a Trek MT60, hoping to find a member locally who can possibly help me with shipping.

Not sure if it is a Trek or an LBS thing, but I see lots of Trek stores offering a trade up program for kids bikes. Guess they take the old Trek in trade when he/she needs a larger bike. Something to look into.

Sounds like a good suggestion. I'll try that as well.

Success!! Found someone on CL selling a 2009 Trek MT60, and willing to ship it to me. A little nervous about sending the money, but using PayPal so should not be any issues.

Funny thing is an LBS I contacted just emailed me as well today that they had an MT60 come in on trade in, that they will be re-conditioning and selling next week.

      Like waiting for a bus

I have to say though, I can't wait for the bike to get here and to get my son out riding it with me.

I am as far as it gets.

      Thanks for the offer though.

      No problem.

My search is sort of still continuing. The CL deal fell through as they could not get the bike apart for shipping, and did not want to risk damaging it (understandable). The shop that said they have the MT60 are being incredibly vague about it. I am in the middle of trying to arrange another deal on CL, but nervous about it falling through again.

I am also running out of time! LOL.

Finally got something! Picked up a 2011 Trek MT60 for $75 on Craigslist. Had someone on another forum help me with getting it down from New York to VA, but even with shipping worked out to be a good deal.

Plans are to now keep an eye out for some new brake levers (might pick up speed dial 7's) and keep an eye out for a cheap 7 speed cassette and trigger shifter.
