I recently taught my oldest son how to ride a bike, taught him on a bike that is too small for him, but I had read somewhere that using a small bike can help kids learn. Now, with his 7th birthday coming up next month I want to get him his 1st proper bike.
I took him to Toys R Us, and had him try some 20" bikes out. He found one that fits him nicely, some of the BMX he did not like as he felt stretched out/leaned too far forward. The one he likes is a mountain bike of some random name.
My problem is that I know how most big box store bikes are (heavy, cheap, etc) and so I am not entirely sure what to do. Realistically speaking the budget for his bike is $100-$150, which does not leave many new options. I don't really want to spend a huge amount, as he grows like a weed, and will outgrow it. I am looking on eBay at Specialized Hotrocks, but there are not many available, and I don't know what other options are out there.
Having said all that, any advice? any bikes worth looking at? I don't really mind buying used as long as it's a decent bike. Already checked classifieds at mtbr.com etc but as can be expected, not a whole lot of kids bikes in the classifieds there.
