Thread: How long have you owned your mk3?

  1. 05-09-2012 08:37 AM #36
14 years and just normal maintenance and a clutch. Its a 2.0 and if you treat it well it will treat you well.

More than 9 years and over 110k miles. It's taken me everywhere and even brought me back.

Bone stock to where it is today. I change a little here and there over time to keep myself interested in it.

bought mine in 2002 with 107K on it, completely stock.

Now the body has 203K, but I swapped the 1.8T into the car around 175K.

How she sits today, minus the rear wing......

I've replaced too many parts to count, but not due to failure. The 2.0L was removed completely running with no issues. Even the trans had no gear change problems, with 175K. Original clutch at the time. At this point, I don't pay attention to how many normal maintenance items ive gone through, since nothing on the car is stock.

Have had very small issues, most are easy fixes. VW gods have had mercy on me

I got mine in 1996... That puts it at what... 16 years? Dang... I have definitely had more issues that the OP... 4 sets of brakes, 2 suspensions, 2 clutchs, ignition switch, wiring issue with my stupid alarm/stereo, 3 accidents... one of them taking out a house! New set of wheels, 4 sets of tires, 4 door latches... and a few other odds and ends that I cant think of right now... All in all, I have 195k miles on it.... it will be in need of a new transmission very soon (reverse is ticking..... might just need a new reverse gear), and a couple seals that are causing a little oil leak. But even with that list, I still enjoy tinkering with it!

I've only owned it for about a year and a half, but it's been in the family since '93 when it was brand new. My uncle had it, then my younger brother, now me...

this is the only couple pics I have of it (when my brother daily'd it...)

Big changes coming... a damn good cleaning, D90's, coils, and maybe turbo the ABA...

had a mk3 vr last year for about a month and sold it becuase the aux water pump blew and overheated the motor, only lost $500 on the car . Now bought this mkturd november of 11' with 152k, now have 163k and only problems are the aux pump leaking and oil leaking from the oil cooler and filter housing, oh and also have created the rest of the problems its had *knock on wood* Hoarding a bunch of parts in my room at the moment for the rebuild in a few weeks, just need 3" exhaust and head work. As well as body work and respray after the build.

    3 weeks at 129K. (98 K2 2.0)

reliable sources tell me it's never had any issues, original clutch, one set of brakes, never a CEL. I believe it. engine and interior is near mint. Body looks like it was commuted through a salt mine (North East Car).

It's my beater, I really don't care much.

Had that happen once... rear bearing exploded, thankfully the rear fender caught it.... that was at 70 MPH too!
