No more red tire but I am just wondering if anyone else does this to carry their bike.

Why not just buy a bike mount?

i'd trust a fork mount over a basket with bungee cords. you also still have room on your crossbar to add a fork mount with tray. If you're on a budget you could just add a one of those bolt on fork mounts (used in pickup truck beds for $20) to your rack. just for ideas: search in the"Narrow Cargo Basket" thread sorry i can't link it.

Because carrying a bike flat in a basket lets you pull into garages with having to take the bike off.

I'd never put the bike in the basket. on a rack or carrier.

I don't really see the problem with the basket at all. I'm getting the pick up fork mounts to simply use the basket for my muddy backpack and whatnot.

Shouldn't be a problem if you secure one of those quick release fork mounts to the basket then simply use a strap to secure the rear tire to the other end of the basket (assuming the basket is long enough for your bike...mine isn't and I have that same basket).

What about finding a used carrier? You just need to make sure it is a Thule that already has the aerobar t-bolt type fittings or that can work with Thule's kit.

I'm going to measure it up when the rain stops hopefully tomorrow and go from there. If it is long enough done deal if not I'll be surfing for used goodies!

I use a upright bike rack to carry my mountain bike (as well as when I need to carry my road bike)....

you can always get a Rocky Mounts Euro Pitchfork

I would be interested to see what the difference in gas mileage would be between this and a standard upright bike mount. Something tells me that if you had a large fairing you could eek out a pretty big mileage increase. Looks like it would scratch the hell out of your bike so I wouldn't try it with my nice bike, but I might throw my bar beater up there if I had a lot of ground to cover.

When did they change the Rockmounts to work with the OE bars? I purchased my pitchfork carrier just over a year ago and it only came with the clamp which was great for the bars on my MKII, but won't work for my MKV bars.

Yea Dan had them in his 337 but I would be curious what condition they are in cause he drove in a parking garage with his bike on and ripped it off the roof. If they are still good I will buy em off you.

I don't understand why people are afraid of scratching a mountain bike. Mine gets beat to hell as it is on a trail, a scratch on the rack is nothing lolol

they had a t-slot compatible one for at least 2 years now

the t-slot is for the front mount. the rear mount is still clamped around the bar

Myne came with another slotted nut for the rear but you have to drill your own hole

Ah I did not know that. Just looked into it further and the parts I need to make it work are just under $30. I do like how it is two bolts in the front as opposed to the single bolt on my current Thule carrier. Seems like it would be a little more secure. Thinking I may fabricate my own threaded plate to work in the slots but not sure if it is worth it to save maybe $15-20.

For those who are looking for the basket and bike carrier combo...the Kuat Vagabond is pretty cool. Not a bad price considering the versatility.

i just strapped some thule bike carriers to the basket to bring home a bike i just picked up.
    specialized rockhopper.
not sure how strong the bars are. not sure if it was good idea. but i made it home with bike on roof.
still looking for the right rack.
gonna sell or trade my votex bars and basket for the thule stuff i need to go with bike trays.
