Thread: 2008 e63

  1. 05-08-2012 05:11 PM #1
Looking at a CPO E63 as a daily. Has low mileage, fully loaded with performance pack, one owner. price is right.

Some basic research says the brakes and tires are the main things that will cost and wear fast. Beyond that, not too much to worry about.

Any comments or owners with XP on these vehicles?

Get it. My friend picked one up with a similar story as yours and loves it, great car for the money!

Just get it. I have no experience with the vehicle, but that V8 is just too badass to pass up.

Airmatic struts will cost almost a grand a corner. CPO should cover it though, I believe.

If I ever had to get rid of my E39 BMW, the E63 would be very high on the list. I think the 6.2L V8 is about as 'perfect' of an engine one can get. And with the Performance Package, it's pure auditory orgasmic.

It is also one of those engines/cars where my response to it being automatic-only is 'who cares?'

While in a tier well below, I'm going on 1 year of C55 ownership and was also worried about the cost of MB-ownership coming from 20 years of VWs. While initial outlays are going to be more (ie; 8.5qts. of $9.00 oil, big tires, big rotors, pads, etc.), so far for me, the benefits far outweigh these issues. Mine wasn't CPO so I have an Indy shop do the hard work. No more of an issue than my wife's B5.5 Passat.

All in all, if it fits what you want and/or need, I'd do it. I went with a C55 due to budget and specifically not wanting something the size and weight of an E since those 20 years in VWs were in MKIIs. Almost half the car of an E-Class in most respects and I didn't think my system could handle the change.

    Something tells me you're exaggerating

If you have to think about it...just buy it.

Airmatic is the weak point; hopefully CPO covers it.

Power almost felt overwhelming. Is there such a thing as too much? As a daily, not sure its practical for what I want, but gut tells me it will be amusing. Repair costs will be a quite a bit higher than what I've been used to with Audis and the current Acura. My previous BMW bit me in the ass with spontaneous breakdowns, and am shy to go back there. Super smooth tho.

    Seriously weighing pros and cons.

You can replace the Airmatic with KW coilovers...

  13. 05-10-2012 12:08 AM #13
OK, I was exaggerating a little bit, but if you can afford the gas and repairs (granted, they are expensive on ANY Benz), it doesn't get much better than the 6.3's growl...

As for practicality, I get to drive this car's lesser-powered sibling on a regular basis (parents'), and the only time they really complain about practicality is when they need to haul long items (skis, artificial Christmas trees, floor lamps). Their car does not have a folding rear seat or pass-through, so depending on what you will use it for, you might want to check for those features. The trunk itself is reasonably sized - I've never found it too small. Rear seat room is just adequate.

I personally have always had a soft spot for these, I almost prefer the E55 though. Something about a supercharged AMG benz tickles me. Whatever you do make sure to throw an exhaust on that bad boy.

there isn't a damn thing that would keep me from that car. I almost bought one but ended up needing a new truck for my business first. Then I couldn't pass up the deal on my Evo...An E63 or C63 will be my next car.

Brakes and tires will not cost and wear faster than other cars if you not planning going dragracing 24-7.

More weight and power eats these two things up no matter how one drives.

After driving the contemporary Audi S6 and BMW M5, my father bought an 2007 E63 in the fall of 2010, CPO from his local Mercedes dealer in Mississauga. He is about to turn 60, and wanted to have a 'fun' car before he eventually purchased a Bluetec E-Class.

After first driving the other two, it would have been difficult to purchase either one of them after driving the E63, but you already know that. The noise is intoxicating, but the car is surprising docile on the regular, outside of the wicked "braaapppp" on start up. He drives it like an old man most of the time, but cracks her open on occasion. This is exactly what he was looking for in a car.

He has had a couple of issues; he has the panorama glass roof, and there is a creak in the rear section that Mercedes has been unable to fix that seems to go away with the suspension in Sport mode. Also, Mercedes replaced his driver door handle under the extended warranty, but other than that, pretty darn good. No air suspension issues or anything like that.

Make sure you check out the fine print in the warranty. I forget the particulars, but when I read ALL of it, I recommended that he pop for the extention beyond the standard CPO warranty. I believe that the standard CPO warranty will not cover air suspension parts beyond the standard factory warranty period, but I may be mistaken on that.

After a couple of years, he still bitches about the gas mileage with a huge s**t-eating grin on his face, so it can't be all that bad .

Just a note, make sure Mercedes popped for a new set of ContiSportContactss and they replace the missing front center grill. They'll do it.
