I have been working on a 2001 VW Passat 2.8 for a while now. I replaced the engine for a customer. Now its misfiring bad.

I did a compression check, everything there is good

    Leakdown test - everything good

    Replaced plugs

Replaced coil pack with known good one

Replaced spark plug wires with good ones

    Its missing on 1, 5, 6, some times 4, sometimes 3

I have check all my vaccum lines, no leaks. Sprayed throttle body cleaner every place I can think of, and no change in idle.

I did replace the timing belt, but that is all good. Start's right up. Just shakes bad.

I did check for spark at the plug wires and its getting really good spark.

    Any ideas?? HELP!

have you rechecked the timing? i've seen guys get the timing off by a tooth after doing the belt job. rough idle/misfire issues might be related to this.

Yep, checked it again. Its spot on.

If timing was off, the valves would hit the pistons, or throw a code

what type of plugs did you use? i think oem is either bosch or ngk. i use and prefer ngk, but i've heard of other brands (i.e. champion, etc.) giving people a headache with misfires.

edit: also check the plug wells for oil. the inner valve cover gaskets have a habit of leaking oil into them and fouling plugs.

for the plug wires, i believe the order from back to front should be:

    6-5-4 (driver side)

    3-2-1 (passenger side)

the coilpack should have a diagram on it that shows where each number connects.

are there any other codes getting logged besides misfires? any pcv work done to it recently?
