So my friend bought his '07 GTI w. EVOMs chip already installed..
He had it at the dealer for some codes/noisy tensioner.
-Dealer replaces MAF and said the software was keeping the code from clearing.
-Takes car to EVOMs and they say it has the wrong MAF pipe and replace it plus tell him his chip has been set back to stock. They're telling him that it's $500 to put the tune back on.
A. I'm thinking the car might have had a larger MAF/MAF plumbing installed for tuning purposes?
B. Dealer cleared codes/wiped tune and then (new/stock)MAF/MAF plumbing wouldn't work.
C. Now he's out almost $1000 for unknown work/issues and EVOMs won't even work w. him on what the car had/has or replace his tune.
Am I off my rocker or is he getting boned?![]()

I guess I would resolving it with their staff first. If that fails of course there's always legal options or saying screw it and getting an apr or revo or giac tune whatever floats your boat.

I don't agree that orginal owner has anything to do with it and it points to an inherent problem w/ flashed programming. It is as if it never existed but the fact is, it did exist and was paid for, regardless of by whom (my opinion). There should be a provision for reflashing it when it is overwritten and it would be the right thing to do for the customer.

If he is not the original purchaser of the programming, and he took it to the dealer and the dealer did work to it, which he paid for, then the only recourse he has, if any, is IF there is still a problem with the same issue. Then he could take it back to the dealer. The fact of the matter is, he did NOT pay for the original programming, and therefor, he is hosed, and that's how the world works, and that is why I will NEVER buy an already modded car (well, one of the many reasons)

I think this whole thing stinks.
1. Probably better to be back on stock software, not "monetarily" better though.
2. $1000 for swapping a MAF and pointing the blame at aftermarket programming? There's probably more to this figure that's being exaggerated but that doesn't sound like a very good deal to me.
3. I think there's a big difference between buying a car with mods/aftermarket parts and buying someone else's crapbox of headaches. In the end evo just pocketed the original money for the software and provided pretty terrible after-sale support. That's not standing by your product. However I'm probably in the camp that believes if it was paid for by the OP then evo probably would have done well to support the second owner as well.

I, too,Ian, but this does raise a legitimate question. Surely, when someone purchases EVOMS software, the "license" doesn't belong to the vehicle's owner, otherwise he could have them remove the software from one car and load it on another for only labor costs.
It appears that EVOMS "licenses" their software for 1 particular owner to 1 particular car...
Seems strange, since others have mentioned that this is the down-side to flashable software...the prices don't reflect a change from being able to sell a "chip" to it being non-transferable.

I wouldn't go that far. EVOMS has done a lot of great things for the local VW community, from hiring one of our own to providing meets at their location, not to mention the products they previously released for VWs.
We are only getting 1 side of the story here...not that we are entitled to hear both sides.![]()

Right, and not really any of us can offer any insights from their point of view, and sadly, the way this thread started, there's not really any way they can even comment on this thread without coming away with egg on their faces.
But to address the OP on this one. You really can't expect EVOMS, or APR, and whomever to warrant the tune on a car when it's been out and about and not even owned by the original owner anymore. No more than Pioneer would warrant a head unit on a used car. Plenty of manufacturers offer a warranty on aftermarket parts, be it exhausts, suspension, etc, but only extend it to the original owner.
Buyer beware, especially on tuned vw's, finding a good modded vw that doesn't fall into the category of 'molested' is truly tough. And based on what OP's friend is seeing, that car is clearly in the 'molested' category.

The customer's car was brought in with a lean code that has nothing to do with software. Phil at BSH was kind enough to provide a replacement MAF tube for the customer's old BSH tube that was incorrect. The car was originally flashed at EVOMS with GIAC software many years ago. We have not been a GIAC dealer for a few years and we offered to flash our software for a discounted rate. It is also true that the software belongs to the original purchaser of the software, so since the dealer wiped it trying to diagnose his lean code is unfortunately no-ones fault as they were following OE VW protocol for OE equipped cars. The car was brought to us to diagnose since the VW dealer could not figure out the problems with this modified car. We quickly diagnosed the issue, Phil at BSH provided an updated part and the lean code is gone.
If this is a serious issue, we are not here to make enemies. Have your friend contact me directly and I will figure out a way to make this right.

Thanks, Boss!
In response to everyone else's concerns about our VW/Audi support, here is a short explanation. Just a few short years ago when I started to work for EVOMS we were 24+ employees strong. During the down economy we unfortunately, like the other 240+ million people that were affected in this country, had to get lean and we have been operating with 12-13 employees since. Because of this we have not had the man-power to further our VW/Audi program and have been focusing on our Porsche product line in hopes of weathering this financial storm. Unlike many other businesses in this uneasy financial climate we have weathered the storm and are presently in a state of growth. On our short-term goal list is to get back into producing new product for the VW/Audi market and getting back to the "fun" stuff we used to do. We now have a dedicated, enthusiastic and energetic team and I could not be more excited about what the future will bring. Like always, we are open from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday and you are all welcome to stop by, chat and check out the ever-changing projects we have here at EVOMS.
Cheers,
Ian

Hey Ian,
Thanks for the reply. It's tough in this situation because he's not a car guy and I originally wanted him to go to Johnny's. Obviously he wasn't taking in any work w. his unfortunate turn in health.
Since the car had tons of EVOM's parts/decals on it I told him you were a very reputable tuner in town and would support the fact his car is modified. Being busy I couldn't make it in or even look/scan the car for him. My hypothesizing above was wrong but I've been an upstanding car/racing community member since I moved here almost 12yrs ago.. (see screen name), No ripping people off, or bad mouthing on my part.
The displeasure began when he called for 2 days and never got a response. Then he headed in to the shop and was alone in the showroom for 10mins before someone noticed him. He left the car the following weds and I didn't talk to him until you had found the problem. I asked him if you had "taken care" of him and when I heard $400-500 for a new MAF pipe I was like WTF!? He said it was over 3hrs of labor to "check the chip installed" on the car and "change the MAF pipe". I felt this was very high since the MAF would take 5mins for my 9yr old son. At this point I'm feeling like, "these guys don't care about some VW junker.. they only care about Porsches w. $20k turbo setups"
"I'm" the one who got upset, Jayson just wants his car taken care of and to get it running well as his backup/trackday fun car.
So after a tensioner, MAF (dealer), and MAF tube/chip inspection (EVOM) he's at over $1600.
I feel bad for him, obviously, and not being familiar w. the new GTi's I posted here.
Sorry, but I feel like the labor costs were high and the fact the software wasn't replaced (minus labor) is also wrong. This is typical when taking a "tuned" car into a dealer you put it back to stock and then have a backup plan to put the tune back on. I understand it's not the situation but it's still upsetting.
Thanks for responding/listening. Some points I feel you can take back and when someone w. a non-Porsche/Gumpert/Mclaren comes in.. cut them a break!
