    wellesley vw.

You can't wait for the service. It has to be dropped off the night before. The fluid has to be cold in order to properly do the job. Having it changed hot will result in an impropper fill.

vw extended the warranty on the mechatronics units. but if you do not do you dsg service at the dealership (using a reciept from an aftermarket shop may be sufficient but i am not positive) it voids the extension.

There was a recall/customer satifaction on replacing them, then extended warranty. You still have to get the serives done at 40K. Even if you have had the mech unit replaced because you are not changing the filter.

Taken right from the repair manual:

"The filter MUST be replaced if:
The 60,000 km maintenance interval was reached.
    Coolant has entered the oil.
Metal shavings were found in the oil.
The clutch is burned or has a mechanical fault"

lol im mechanically inclined and am confused, colonial quoted me around 300 and that is an hour from me, kelly vw 5 min away told me 500. i am also going to need an oil change within the next 3k miles, is the 40k service also needed? it seems like a bunch of checks that cost another 400

Where are you located? If you're on the south shore, you may wanna call Murphy Bros in Quincy. I've had nothing but good experiences there with my Audis and VWs.

Its an 09. The dealer called and said they are running a 20% off services will next month. So I'd be paying around 400 for it. Is the 40k service also needed? I don't have another 400 to dish out for that too. Can I just get an oil change or are those checks and filters a must?

A 40K is just an air filter, pollen filter, oil change, fuel additive and tire rotation basically. Spark plugs are done at 60K. SInce you said that you are mechanically inclined I'm sure you can do that stuff yourself. Just save your recipts that is all. That is what we tell customers. Just use those recipts for your documentation
