It's the beginning of the season for HPDE's, autox's and the sort up here in Michigan. I love seeing daily driver's in track mode and all out weekend track rats.
I want to see more...show them

I will be driving these two this weekend (dad's 930 street car and a 930 race car we share):

I've driven the street car quite a bit, the racecar is a new venture for both of us. Should be interesting with a LOT less weight and quite a bit more power (450HP at the wheels). Also the thing is sprung super stiff.
I'm gonna be posting a video early next week of some in car I plan to shoot on the 'ol GoPro. So be on the lookout for that.

Lately it has been the Alfa. So far it has survived 3 events.
Been Autocrossing Miatas for 3 years or so, this will make it out a few times this season. When the Alfa breaks?
And I somewhat frequently end up codriving cars that are better prepped than my budget allows. No sense in posting them, though. All the NA Miatas look the same, plus or minus some stickers.![]()

I just drove my S4 at Lime Rock in April. I still say my older BMWs were more fun on a racetrack, it's probably the weight of the S4 more than anything that keeps it from being better. But for daily driving the S4 is nearly freaking perfect, so I guess it's the typical tradeoff.

Could you explain this to me--I've seen this referenced several times over the years in various threads and it just doesn't make much sense to me*, unless you paid for a part of the purchase price of the car. Why would someone who actually owns a specific car (at least with reference to amateur competition) want someone else piloting it? Wouldn't it create some tension if you (the non-owner) regularly get times that are faster than the owner? I could see if an owner partnered with a faster driver just so the car has a better chance of getting a W, but why would that matter is it's at the amateur level? Who pays for repairs/gas/entrance fees/regular maintenance?
I can't see a situation where I'd want to share my car with anyone*. I'd rather just learn to be as good a driver as I could be.
*the only instance where I could see this making sense if relatives (father and son) share a car as a way of bonding.

A lot of people in autocross share cars, if you're doing a lot of events it helps keep costs down. Usually, but not always, one of them is more mechanically adept than the other. Not sure I'd do it, but I know quite a few people who did/do it.

There's several reasons it comes up in autocross:
-At big events, having a second driver means the car makes runs twice as often - warming the tires faster and keeping them warmer.
-Race tires are pricey. Having your car make 8 runs in a day instead of 4 doesn't add much wear and tear, except to tires. So if you have a well prepped car and someone offers to buy you tires for the season if they can co-drive it, good deal for both of you!
-If you want to know how you stack up against the big boys, but don't want to spend big boy money on car prep, co-driving is appealing. I did this for one year. I'd have bought the tires anyway. Above that, it cost me less than one 'good' shock absorber. (And I hear you need four of them things!)
-Codriving with someone of higher skill level will teach you things and make you faster. To address your comment about hard feelings, well, suck it up. If someone steps into your car and kicks your ass, you could learn a thing or two from them, eh? I've had it go both ways, but it's most fun when you and the other person are closely matched.
-It's just plain fun to drive other cars among people you trust, for a change of pace or if someone's usual car is out of commission.
The common factor to all of the above that makes it reasonable is that wadding up a car at an autocross event is much less common than on a track, nevermind a wheel-to-wheel race. Plus, if you're smart, you arrange this ahead of time. Generally the car owner deals with maintenance and anything that breaks that is not the fault of the driver. Flat spot the tires? Hit a pole? You're payin'.

Thanks for the perspective, as it's not something I really considered before. I assume that most people who share cars do it with people they know, but are there people who own cars who randomly look for people to share driving duties with for the season because of the reasons you listed? Like on local SCCA forums or something like that?

Yes, usually people they know, and usually both parties have several years of experience. But also, yes, people will also go searching for drivers or rides for national tour events. Especially the national championships because not everyone wants or has the time to get their autocross car halfway across the country. So fly out, drive, fly home. Like a rock star.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of folks who have never codriven and have no desire to. And I've had two people approach me about codriving the Alfa - but I consider it too fragile to take that risk. On the other hand I've had other people drive my Miatas several times without a second thought. (including scheduling 4 different drivers across 2 classes for a rallycross - But I was also about to sell the car so hey, why not)
