Thread: Cabrio stalled. Burnt electrical smell.

  1. 05-09-2012 09:13 PM #1
My daughters 02 cabrio stalled on her and doesn't even turn over at all now. There is a burnt electical smell under the hood which appears to be near the battery. Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong. Thanks for any help.

Was there anything acting up before it happened? Can you take a photo of the engine bay? Is there any aftermarket stereo wiring in there?

I did scan the engine codes with VCDS Lite. There was a code P1570 - Engine Start
Blocked by Immobilizer. The immobilizer module didn't respond when I tried to test it. I don't think it ever did though. The power locks stopped working a couple months ago. The stereo is factory. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. Thanks.

Edit: After more research I see that the immobizer could possibly be part of the instrument cluster module. I think that didn't respond also. I'll have to double check tomorrow.

Check the wires at the starter.

Also ignition switches are great about causing a "no crank" issue.

Immobilizer will let the car start, then shut it right back off.

Any thoughts I post are my own. I am not speculating on any repair VWoA is making, has made, or will make.

I just had it towed to be looked at. Thanks for the help. I'll post back when I find out what the problem is/was.

It was the starter. It was just replaced 6 months ago because the bendix gear wouldn't engage. Can't believe a starter dying caused the car to stall also. Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it fixed. Did they warranty the part?

My daughters boyfriend put the last one in. I can't believe how much they charged to replace it. Astronomical.

*NOTE I've found that when you scan a car with an immobilizer and do not turn the key to the on position before it scans, you will get code P1570 every time.

POS died on her again. I have 2 vw's. They both basically fell apart shortly after the warranty ended. They will be my last vw's. Just ranting. I know that it's 10 years old now but, still.........

She said the guages all went crazy. She smelled an alcohol smell. She pulled over and turned it off. It wouldn't turn over when she tried to start it again. I guess there's a short in it somewhere.

Something seems amiss here, starters don't usually just "die" unless there is something else wrong with the car causeing the starter to labour while starting the engine.

Did you get it fixed yet? It definately sounds electrical, but maybe that is killing the starter. Replacing the starter gets it going again, but probably is masking the root problem.

That is kinda where I was going too!

They replaced it under warranty. I'm thinking what you guys are thinking. Just waiting to see if it happens again. I hope it was just a fluke. I know it's probably not though.

Have a look at the ignition switch. Make sure it is disengaging after being turned to "start."

A local dealer went through a few starters when my car was under manufacturer's warranty. The problem wasn't the starter it was the ignition switch.

Does it have the fuse box on top of battery?
