    greetings fellow b4 owners,

so I need to get serial number on back of radio for the safe mode code.
tried doing that coat hanger thing, doesn't work. thinking of just replacing
it all together, but it needs removing regardless.
definitely dont wana go to the dealership.

    what do I need/do?

    thanks

If it's this kind of radio...

...then it needs a couple tools that look like this:

They're inserted into vertical slots that are located to the left of the >< buttons, and to the right of the SCAN buttons, to release the detents holding the radio in.

The tools should be availabe from a VW dealer, or you can search online.

You can actually go to a VW dealership and give them your vin number, they have all the codes in a database, and they should just give you your code (fo free!!!). At least thats what I did, took maybe 5 minutes. I guess if your trying to remove the radio anyway this doesn't help you too much, but hey.

walmart has the keys. They say they're for fords but the second type of keys work on VW/Audi.

Just go to Best Buy's (or some other mobile audio retailer) install bay, politely ask an installer to pull it & tip him $5....

The majority of dealers won't do it for free, and will even charge you a full hour of labor for something that takes a few minutes only.

Sometimes service managers and the lot can be a real tool over something so easy as retrieving a code.

Not true. They will need both the vehicle VIN as well as the radio serial number to get you the code. The fo free part is optional. Dealers can and do charge for the service of pulling out a radio, retrieving the serial number & looking up the code. The amount charged depends on the dealership & one's 'relationship' with the advisor.

    Hey: I resemble that remark!

For my better wholesale customers & people I 'know', I do the codes fo free. For the ones I don't know, the 'good customer', the entitled ones; they have to go to service.

Well, I definitely walked into a volkswagen dealership and gave them just my vin and they definitely gave me the code at no charge at all, I had never been in there before, I did not know anyone behind the desk. Idk if I just got lucky or whatever but it worked, and if the guy tried to charge me for hitting a couple keys I would have walked out, BUT he didn't. Sooo all I'm sayin' is it's worth a shot, if your dealership isn't too far away.

AFAIK dealer only needs the VIN to make sure the car isn't stolen...

I'm not sure, but I think the VIN is really used to connect the radio to something, should it ever come up as stolen. Or, I'm just talking outtm my @. One of the two.

The keys I ordered worked flawlessly and the (right) dealership gave me the proper code no problem nor charge.

So thanks again for the suggestions and advice, always appreciated.

Shout out to marek k for the visual and antichritonwheels for the website.

And to those with the same problem order the keys and call the (right) dealership. The wrong ones will try and tell you otherwise.

The text circled in red indicates that the dealer is to retrieve radio codes free of charge.

Is that for the original owner or is it transferable?
