Also, cannot believe 5-6 lanes of highway in one direction and it's still clogged. Best we get in CT on the shoreline is 3 lanes that are about as wide as a Fiat 500.

That's the main reason. It's illegal, so no one does it. Since no one does it, no motorist is expecting to ever have a bike share space with them.. People are unpredictable.

Even if it was legal, I would still have a hard time with it. (see unpredictable comment above) My motorbike isn't exactly skinny, so there's that, too.
