So my mk2 GTi got totaled and I'm thinking of picking up a 90 sedan or coupe cause I love the sound of the 5 cylinder 20v . So how many came to America , how hard is it to find parts ?
if you can't find mk2 parts PM me I can find whatever you need
I also make custom parts like grilles PM me with what you would want ie integrated aftermarket fogs and such like that

Not many 20V sedans, and only 1700 coupes. Parts are getting harder to find. It is a love hate affair.

Just some parts are NLA. And because of so few, finding parts in a junkyard are like non existant. Don't buy one from the rust belt. The bodies are galvanized, but the underneath gets hard to work on, due to rust.

I haven't had a huge problem finding parts. They are around whether they are second hand or from established retailers. Many of the major parts are shared with the sedans, which aren't terribly rare, so that helps. I've been picking one apart at the junk yard near me for the past month or so as I need things or think they'd be useful to someone else.

Other than that I keep an eye on Audifans.com in their marketplace, call up Toledo Joe, or shop around on the internet. I've mostly bought my parts through Autohaus AZ and 034 Motorsports. Both have been helpful when I've called them up. I've even gotten a few things off Amazon. It takes a bit more love than a more established car, but it is totally doable. If you can use the search feature on forums and google there is a wealth of information to be found.

I will second getting a car from outside the rustbelt. I purchased mine in Oregon and even after 1.5 winters in Michigan I still can't find a spec of rust on the body shell.

I talked to some guy at shokan all audi who has one and he flat out said this is not a daily for a college student... plus there is one in Thornton Colorado forsale for 2600 and then another in fort Collins for 5000 (both in Craigslist) I want one but not as a daily while finishing my masters because the guy basically put it I could get 5 mk2s and it would still be cheaper ... the abs switch is broken in that one passenger side window reg is broken diff lock doesn't work ebrake doesn't work needs driver side seat and windshield
...I told him that and everything second hand is like 3000 plus it has 176k with the original audi distributor , other then for that what are the common problems with the coupes, how hard is it to put a six speed quattro trans in it , how hard is it to put in a 2.2 turbo ?

I'm with Harley, i havent had a hard time finding parts. the parts are mostly interchangeable with other models besides a few critical coupe only parts, but even then, if you are on the forums finding stuff isn't all that hard.

Search for my thread for info putting the 2.2 AAN 20vt engine into these cars, physically it is a pretty straight forward swap and using oem euro parts makes it literally plug and play, including the wiring (again using european parts). the six speed 01e can be put in relatively easily as well, again there are euro pats available to make it a direct swap (trans mounts, linkage, drive shaft can be sourced from other US models).

Personally i love my car, i have modified mine from 100% stock to what it is now without spending money from my daily job, just by buying and parting out other cars i was able to do the entire swap. I would NOT recommend this car to anyone who isn't going to be doing the majority of the work, it will be expensive. I only pay for windshield replacement, alignments, and the MOUNTING of tires on wheels. Everything else is done by myself mostly in my driveway, that includes the engine engine swap and re-wiring of the car, all done in a drive way with hand tools and a cherry picker.

www.s2forum.com is a great source for euro parts, since it is located in england everyone speaks english and that makes finding parts easier.

I also used the ebay.de site, ebay.co.uk, ebay.fr, ebay.it, you get the point.

common issues? there are many with the engine, such as injectors and vac leaks. the rear diff not working is usually a vac leak.

Like Hybrid said, doing the work yourself is a must unless you're interested in sinking a fortune into a 20+ year old car. If you're willing and able to learn I don't see any reason it can't be a DD for a college student. Now if you plan to start doing large engine and suspension upgrades you will want a second car to DD or drive while the CQ is down.

A good spot to start learning the ins, outs, and problems with these cars is 20v.org. There is a new and old style of the site; I've used both since they present the information differently. Seems I learn something new every time I go to either.

Seems that most quirky problems in these cars is due to either a vacuum or electrical problem. There are several isolated vac systems within the car; cruise, central locking, engine, etc which in some cases helps troubleshooting. Most of the electrical issues come down to corroded connectors in my experience. I've fixed many small problems for free or cheap with just a mity vac and a multimeter.

My car has 245k and keeps going and getting better.

just picked up a 1990 90 quattro 20V sedan with 185,XXX miles for $750 yesterday. it smokes a little, timing belt was replaced recently, thinking there might be a vacuum leak on the ISV.

Any ideas on where to start, in order to make sure its mechanically sound? Thanks.

sry, but the gti aba is dime and dozen, while the coupe is unique especially in the states.
speed comes later unless you have money.

Ok, I am tired of general questions. It gets me when people want to buy a car, or they just bought one, and they want someone to answer their general questions. We don't mind answering specific questions, but all the general questions have been answered before. Spend a little of your time finding stuff, it is out there. We are not going to repeat the same things over and over and over and over again.

DO A SEARCH on these forums, then come back an ask SPECIFIC questions.

Yea, there are some parts that are interchangeable from other sedans and such, but there are a lot of Coupe specific parts, that are hard to find, or expensive. varia, and I spend a lot of time at the JYs. The cars are coming in less and less frequent, so parts are harder to find, especially non rust parts.
