Thread: 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Spy Photos

  1. 05-11-2012 12:17 PM #1

    http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...yder-spy-shots
In these spy shots, we see the limited-production version in its latest stages of development. It looks quite far along, with a monochrome racing stripe scheme in place of the typical camouflage and a completely finished exterior. Even the clear cover over the engine--which appears to have top-mount exhaust outlets-- is in place.

The sleek, aerodynamic shape is very close to the concept version of the car, and the rear wing is deployed--though it's not yet clear if it's active or fixed. Relocating the exhaust outlets from the side of the car, as on the concept, to the top of the engine bay, could be about keeping the batteries or other components cool and comfortable. The car also appears to have a removable hard top roof insert to transform the car into a near-coupe-like vehicle.

If you've already forgotten, the 918 Spyder is powered by a 500-plus-horsepower 4.0-liter (or larger) V-8 engine at the rear wheels and a pair of electric motors good for a combined 218-horsepower, one at each axle.

The combo enables the 918 to rip off sub-3.2-second 0-60 mph runs and a top speed of 199 mph--and yet it's capable of up to 78 mpg. Porsche has said the 918 Spyder offers up to 16 miles of all-electric range. A lithium-ion battery pack supplies the electricity, and can be charged from the wall in about 3-6 hours.

Porsche gave the 918 Spyder the green light for production back in July, 2010, after reaching a 1,000-buyer threshold the company had set as the benchmark for sufficient interest to support production. The order books opened on the car last March, at a price of $845,000.

Porsche says it plans to build just 918 of the cars. It is due to arrive to the lucky few around the end of 2013.

So they need 1,000 buyers to support production but will only build 918? Well played

Some serious engineering. I'll wait to judge when production is unleashed.

This one should look pretty good once it has nice paint on it!

Isn't this the widest Porsche they've ever made? I recall reading that in one of the magazines...

It has to do with keeping the head away from the electrical components, IIRC.

Not all of those 1000 buyers will follow through with the purchase. Just like how airlines and hotels overbook.

How does this, in any way, compete with the 911? This fits in the next slot up, where the Carrera GT, GT1, and 959 once occupied.

I may be mistaken, but I think he was referring to styling cues? This looks more like its own car than "another 911 shaped Porsche".

I love Porsches, but honestly I'm tired of seeing the same shape out of Stuttgart year after year.

pretty darn close to the concept
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Am I the only one that sees some R8 blade influence?

It looks good though. I can't wait to see how it performs.

$845K seems reasonable for the world's first plug-in supercar, considering some other recent supercars that have gone for a lot more than that.

I guess those are as applicable as the Rimac. The Porsche is hybrid. The Rimac is all electric. I suppose a hybrid is technologically superior to a full electric vehicle, but for some reason I have more respect for the latter.

The engine has a hot V set up, so the intake manifolds are where the headers usually are. I understand Porsche did it to contain the heat from the exhaust in one area, away from the battery(ies).
