Thread: 2000 Jetta 1.8t. Is it worth the purchase?

  1. 05-11-2012 01:11 PM #1
Hello all. I am new to this forum so bear with me a moment. I am looking at a 2000 Jetta 1.8t that the motor is blown in. The owner has already pulled the heads and the pistons have damage. The car is red with tan interior. The interior is fair with a few stains on the leather seats. The clear coat on the paint is starting to peal on the top behind the sunroof, and on the door latches. Otherwise it is in pretty food shape. It has been sitting about a year. My question is: Is it worth $800 to buy this Jetta and get a rebuilt engine or used engine? Where is the best place to find an engine. I want to purchase this for my daughter who is just beginning to drive. I want it to be an eye catcher when finished, but also reliable. I live in Gulfport, MS. I thoroughly appreciate any help I can get from all of you. I have always had a love affair with Volkswagen from afar. Now I hope to finally get my hands on one. I just do not want to make a bad decision.

That's all I had to see, no, it's not worth it. if you are new to vw's get youself one that has under 100k miles (perferably) in pretty decent cosmetic state, don't pay a cent over 4,000.

**If the engine is blown there will most likely be problems with the turbo, a new one of those will cost you just as much as you've paid for the car, not to mention the price to rebuild a engine and replace pistons and head and repair cylinder damage. If you care about cosmetics and the paint a good paint job will also cost you a great deal of change.
    Leave gap for fat chicks.

try to buy it for 400. without the engine working, it's worth nothing. it's just scrap metal. that's fixable if you are mechanically inclined.

I have to agree with these guys. I bought a running '01 automatic Jetta for $3,000. Paint was good, interior good. I ended up having to have the tranny rebuilt for $3,200 and have to fix the suspension plus a couple of other things before I can even start doing the nice stuff like lowering, exhaust and other things. I've paid more for repairs than I paid for the car. At this point, it isn't worth it for me to get rid of it. I'll just make it a project car that I can play with. Good luck on your decision.
    Later!

O.k. Thanks for the info guys. Where is the best place to look for a good used volkswagen that is reliable? There arn't many to choose from in my neck of the woods. I have seen a few posts on here for used cars, but most have been modified to a point in which I am not comfortable turning my daughter loose to drive. I am mainly looking for a stock vw that is dependable and not too far away.

Look for one with a 2.0, not a 1.8T. Much more reliable. It seems reliability is your concern moreso than performance.

Try Craigslist, Ebay, local dealers, newspapers, etc. Just don't buy a car sight unseen.

    I always heard just the opposite....avoid the 2.0 like the plague...buy a 1.8T.
