Hey guys I found myself wanting to play a flight sim for the PC. Can anyone recommend a good combat flight sim? Not as arcade as Ace Combat. I am playing World of Warplanes at the moment, but I want something a bit more substantial to play.

    TIA

    DCS: P-51D Mustang

The DCS: P-51D Mustang offers both highly-detailed simulation and easy-to-play "game" mode options for both hardcore and casual gamers. When in simulation mode, this is the most authentic simulation of the P-51D Mustang that has ever been done for the PC. Enjoy both the thrill of flying this warbird and operating its various weapons against a variety of ground and airborne targets.

An interactive training system puts you in the cockpit with an instructor as he walks you step-by-step of learning to fly the Mustang.

A powerful yet easy-to-use mission editor allows you to create your own missions and campaigns. A one-click Mission Generator also allows you to instantly create battles as small or large as you wish.

Fly online with built-in server browser that supports up to 32 players in both head-to-head and cooperative gameplay. Fly online with other DCS aircraft like the Black Shark and the A-10C Warthog.

Features of the DCS: P-51D Mustang:

-Highly detailed six-degrees-of-freedom cockpit. Interact with cockpit controls with your mouse.
-Unmatched flight physics and that allow you to truly feel what it's like to fly this legend.
-Accurate P-51D Mustang model, squadron markings, and weapons.
-Detailed modeling the P-51D Mustang instruments, weapon, engine, radios, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
-Take part in a Challenge Campaign to test your flying and combat skills.

If you are "hardcore" enough, try DCS: A-10C Warthog.

Start up procedures of an A-10C Warthog....

a nicely made movie... all IN GAME graphics!!

Without a doubt - get Rise of Flight.

The demo is very nearly the entire game - excluding career mode, etc. It is free to download - and you get access to two planes (one allies, one central). You can buy planes (and once you buy a single plane, the full game unlocks (with career mode, mission editor etc.).

But you can download it and give it a shot for free. WW1 is a heck of a time to be flying. Because the planes are so simple, you can play full sim, and you still only have a small handful of controls to worry about. It looks freakin' stunning, and is a hoot.

This is a video made using the game (all in game footage)

This last one was produced recently and shows the current version of the game.

    Aces High II

It's a MMG, with about 200 to 500 people playing at any given time. It's free to download but costs about $15/month to play. I played for about 8 years and loved it... I only stoped when my first son was born since it's pretty time intensive, but I'm thinking of getting back into it now that he's older.

Graphics are really good but not mind blowing, customized skins, excellent avionics (not arcadee). They've got tons of planes to fly, I'm guessing about 150 different birds between bombers, fighters and such... Plus you can drive tanks, landing craft, pt boats, battleships, bombard a coastline with ship guns, aircraft carrier ops, customized loadouts and more.

It can be frustrating since sometimes you'll fly 10 mins to get to altitude or into a combat area and just get nailed and have to do it all over again, sincie it's all real time. But man, when the combat is good, it is a total blast.

I'll second the recommendation for Rise of Flight. You'll need an above-average rig to get good visuals out of it, though.

Anyone play this way back in the day?

I thought it was pretty cool. It had a bunch of missions based on real life missions from a bunch of different eras of air combat. I wish it had a modern successor.

Watching the video brought back memories. But i didn't remember it being sooo bad.

The 8-bit volumetric clouds had me rolling

Dunno, I think it looked pretty darned good for its time. Spent many hours playing it.

Another one that I just remembered was "Retaliator F-29"

I didn't play that one but i did play a very similar F-117 game and also Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, which was very similar to Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. I mean, the menus are nearly identical. SWOTL is another game i would like to see a new version of. I loved flying the little german rocket plane to attack a B-17, get a few strafe runs in and try to glide back to base.

    This little bugger:

By the way, if anyone is interested in some multi-player Co-Op games on ROF, just hit me up. We can chat via xbox party, and I'll host some co-op missions I've made.

Just let me know what planes you have. I can do a whole slew of missions with just the DV or Spad XIII. I also have an excellent control map for the Xbox controller.

Was recommended to me by a guy in the top 10 of the RoF PvP leaderboard and it's easily the best joystick I've ever owned.

I actually have a nice old-school looking Saitek which is pretty nice, but I find I prefer my xbox controller. Linking rudders to my trigger buttons makes life easier than a twist joystick (since I don't run pedals). I actually run the Xbox controller, and use the mouse to look around. Believe it or not it works quite well.

I really like DCS A10, but if you want to play it you better ready to spend hours learning it. Days. Weeks. It's satisfying once you get it going. Well, from what I've heard, I usually spend so much time getting off the ground that I forget I have a crappy joystick and no TrackIR, so I rapidly just see if I can do an emergency landing and go play something else.

That is the one that I use $40 price matched (Walmart), purchased at Fry's.

    Good JS.
