The wagon is not dead! BMW has unveiled the latest 3 Series Sports Wagon and announced that it will again be available to U.S. customers. The new long-roof 3 goes on sale in Europe later this year as the 328i, 330d, and 320d Touring. U.S. customers need to wait until Spring 2013 for the 3 Series Sports Wagon to arrive in showrooms, and powertrain details for our market have not yet been announced. The current 3 Series wagon is only offered as the 328i here in the U.S. (with and without xDrive).

The new car is larger than the current model, and boasts 10 percent more cargo volume according to BMW. As with the 3 Series sedan, the wagon will be available in Sport, Luxury, and Modern lines, as well as an M Sport Line, each with a unique approach to their interior and exterior trim.

Inside, the back seats have a 40:20:40 split, and the cargo space offers plenty of room (as you can see in the photos). There's also hidden storage, a standard partition net, and if the cargo cover isn't in use, it can be stowed under the cargo floor for added convenience.

Amenities include an available power tailgate that, with the optional Comfort Access package, becomes a hands-free power tailgate; you just wave your foot under the bumper a la the new Ford Escape. Naturally, BMW will offer its full complement of tech and driver aids, like BMW Apps, a color HUD, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, BMW Parking Assistant, Rear-view Camera with Top View, and the BMW Assist telematics service.

So, the good news: new 3 Series wagon. The bad news: you need to wait a year. But that's better than no wagon at all, right.

This great news. I hope they make a 335is wagon with the 7 speed dsg and sell it in the US.

It looks very Benz from the rear 3/4 view.

    I like it.

Looks like a 3er wagon to me. I can't find any Benz traits whatsoever. Previous gen:

I just cannot warm up to that front end at all. The rest of it is ok, but that headlight/grille treatment is terrible.

In person, it looks familiar to me like the old one. When I saw it, I just assumed it was the e90.

Yeah, that front 1/4 view is not very flattering.

Glad to see they are keeping these alive over here though.

It actually looks pretty refreshing in person.

This will be "F31" then? Definitely not bad looking. Then again the current A4 Avant is a looker too.

the new 3 series front end looks like a PANCAKE!
they should just nickname them pancakes, but then they'd only include the pancake syrup in some worthless package not stand alone option as usual

With chrome grills the new 3 series looks HORRIBLE. I mean, when you make a car look SO bad that the car from 2 generations ago suddenly looks like Jesus Christ himself delivered the best looking car upon us, crafted by god and the devil, you've done something wrong.

Black grills improves the looks 170 million percent, and they should ONLY be black.

    Looks good to me.

New 3er is awkward from the 3/4 view, but very nice straight-on.

The X1 could have easily taken place for the 3 series wagon in the U.S. But it looks like wiser heads prevailed. Lookin' at the prices, it looks like there's enough of a price difference between the two for the U.S. market.

The previous gen. 3 series wagon started at $37,000 and the xDrive starts at $39,500.

    The X1 28i starts at $31,545, the xDrive28i $33,245 and the xDrive35i is $39,345.

Fabulous. But as much as I'm a European wagon fan (having owned two of them), I can't say that the now-older me wouldn't just buy a X3. Probably very similar in pricing too. No third pedal though (not that I'd be in the market for one)...

A serious problem is likely to repeat with this F31. The 328iT Xdrive 4-cyl. is likely to be priced the same or so as a X3 35i Xdrive 6-cyl. (those names to be damned).

I think this car looks great. The 3-series wagon is a bit small in cargo area compared to my 6 but I could live with that. Just means the dogs can't move around as much.

    I'll take a red six-speed M sport please.

I suppose it is good news that we are getting the wagon but I really hope it gets more engine options than the stupid 4-banger. Long live the straight six!
