I'm on my 3rd VW within 11 yrs...all have had manual transmissions and have never had any tranny issues, just expected clutch replacements and the odd oil leak. Now I'm married and my wife refuses to drive a stick . We both like VWs and would like to purchase another one...likely an '01 to '06 Jetta TDI. The idea of owning a VW auto is giving me heart palpitations, however.

I believe the DSG became available in '05? Would like to hear opinions on which transmission in the '01 to '06 years is the most reliable/durable among DSG/01M/09A/09G? This will be a deciding factor in our purchase. I have done some reading here...09A appears to be notorious for reverse piston cracking and valve body issues...01M appears to be the worst overall... I don't mind repairing a transmission that can be improved with updated parts ie a redesigned reverse piston but I don't want to put my money/time into a component that is just doomed to fail again. Any comments are appreciated.

All the trans you mention have common problems.

DSG has flywheels that make noise and strip the splines. Also the computer/valve body assemby (mechatronic) acts up.

09G has some major valve body issues. We just did one here at 44,000 miles.

Plus the issues you mention on 01m and 09A.
Auto trans fluid change or flush will not make a trans fail. Stop spreading the wives tale/urban myth.

Thanks, CoolAirVW. If you HAD to pick one of the above, which one is the lesser evil?
