you can never have too many rims![]()

I got up this morning and looked outside... and there was a set of 14" tear drops sitting in my girlfriend's landlord's backyard! Iv'e been looking for these for the Fox, and there they were, just sitting in the garden
I guess they were cleaning out their garage yesterday or something
Soooo, the gf will ask them today if they are for sale, and if the price is right, I'll pick em' up!
and then I'll have a set of steelies, Orlando's, Tear Drops and Castellet's ....
which equals waaaaay too many rims for the Fox...![]()

Wow that is awesome! Are they clean?
Love those wheelsifyou have the space definitely go for it, I'm excited to see how those would look on your clean Fox - those wheels came stock on the first brazilian Gol GTi too

Well...i think you can have too many....I have the following rims, all of them are just sitting around taking up space except for the Le Cas.
Audi 14" snowflakes
Audi 13" snowflakes
Tarantulas
Teardrops
Le Cas 14"
Mk1 snowflake
Audi 14" Ronal type turbines
The ones I really want but don't have are the white color keyed snowflakes from a Cabriolet.

Awesome news!!!
So, my girlfriend went and talked to her landlords today about the Teardrops. and they were like ' just take them, we were going to throw them out anyways!'
So I went and picked them up within minutes, and guess what, they are knock-offs, made in Brazil!!
Perfect!

I have a set of RM's too but they're rough so I don't count them. Need two lips at least and I think one barrel is bad. I had a set of P-slots but sold them years ago, shipped them out east iirc.
As for the Brazilian knock-offs, that's pretty cool...did they have center caps too? Lets see some pics!
#12
#13
For sure, pics later today or tomorrow! They are made by 'Rodao' and it also says 'Binno' on one of the center caps, which are all present AND made of metalThe wheel surfaces are quite tarnished from being stored in the damp, but look really straight, and hey, free is free, right?

Can't beat that. also metal center caps are the sweet because you can polish the entire wheel.
#15
#16
Not sure why you think they are "knock offs".
They seem to be made by an official supplier.
Just made in Brazil.
Home grown wheels for the Brazilian buggy.
#17
I just assumed the original tear drops were made in Germany, but were they all made in Brazil?
But I like the idea of having Brazilian wheels on a Brazilian car for sure, it's a bonus feature!
#18
Some are Brazilian manufacture. I have teardrops on a mk2 that came from a quantum syncro I got several years back and I noticed a while ago that one is not like the other three, the paint color looks grey instead of black. I looked at it the other day and it says made in Brazil while the other three don't say where they're made, at least not on the outer face.
#19
When we gonna get some pics of these???

Here they are, dirty and flat, straight from the shed
Just look at these nasty mud/snow tires!! Makes me want to go off roading!
This is my fav thing about these wheels, nice and local
More better pictures to follow. The only thing I don't like about these wheels, besides the tires, is that they are the heaviest 14" alloy wheels made by VW, at 18.5 lbs with center caps/![]()
or just under 40 lbs with tires......
#22
Ya, I'm happy with them!
Regarding the finish,..... what's the best way to clean these up?
There is no pitting, but the tarnish is quite deep. I had a go at them with some fine steel wool, that takes some of it off.
They don't seem to be clear coated, so should I just keep scrubbing?
#23
Wow...no clear. Didn't know they made these without the clearcoat. The ones I have I think are all clear coated....not that it did much to prevent the corrosion underneath...which on mine is bad.
I assume your wheels are machined surface....small lines in them? If they are I don't know how to get the corrosion out without damaging the machining. In the past all I've done is remove the clear and sand with 1200-1500 grit and then polish. After that you can coat with clear. It tends to be a lot of work too. Depending on your climate the clear might be mandatory.
If it's more like oxidation you might be able to buff out the damage without affecting the machining. On mine there is no fix other than sanding after the clear is removed, and mine are so bad I don't really think it's worth it...and I don't have caps. About the only thing I could do is have the clear removed, sand and then paint maybe if I wanted to keep them.
good luck

Yep, they are defo machined, with the thin lines and everything.
I'll do my best with some elbow grease and report back!

Arg, bad news....
So, I spent a couple hours polishing one wheel, started looking pretty damn good!
As a reward for all my hard work, I decided to mount one up, to see how it'll look-
wtf.....the wheel don't fit!
Thinking I was going crazy, or suffering from heat stroke, I call my mechanic buddy and he comes over with his calipers, and sure enough,
these Teardrop rim bolt holes are 4x112........
Really? What car do these fit? No VW I ever heard of.
So, I mounted up one of my Le Cast's instead, and it looked great, so I felt a bit better
Guess my free Teardrops are going onto CL, once I'm done polishing them.
Oh well!
#26
Sorry for say that, but if I recall correct these wheels are not Volkswagen made but it's a replica made by an old company called Rodão (the same group of Binno wheels back then), as you see near the "Made in Brazil". The stock wheels were made by Borlem, even the steelies.
#27
Good to know that...I would never have guessed, but now that I look at the bolt circle the spaces are oval, so the maker could have drilled them for several bolt patterns, and the OE wheels are not like that.
I'd go to a shop and see what your options are for converting these to 4x100 before I'd let these go....especially if the wheels are already hub-centric to the VW components.

Maybe the grooves could be drilled at 4x100, making them dual bolt pattern wheels... not sure if worth it though.
As for refinishing them, I keep thinking about mounting them on the car without tires, front end jacked up, put it into gear and spin it fast, while taking the angle grinder with wire wheel to it![]()

Alain, that's so crazy it just might work..... if I could only bolt them on to the car!!!!
