I've made it almost to 40 without listening to the Beatles. I give in.

I think Revolver is a great album. It's the only one I've listened to. I don't like the cheesy crap so can someone please layout the progression of their albums and how much each of them may or may not suck.

    Thanks.

I like Rubber Soul a lot. George Harrison was taking sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar.

Grew up listening to the Beatles .. get better and better the more you listen. I prefer the later half of their discography and would suggest:

    Sgt. Peppers
    The White Album
    Let it be
    Rubber Soul
    Revolver

That being said, the earlier albums are great as well, upbeat, lively and fun. All have their own flavour. Not sure what you mean by 'cheesy crap'? Each album and song has a story, time and place behind it. Within that particular context, they all make sense.

Since you started with Revolver, I'd go (not quite chronologically):

Past Masters Vol II (mid to late singles collection)
    Rubber Soul
    Magical Mystery Tour
    Sgt. Pepper
    Hard Day's Night
    Help!
    White Album
    Abbey Road
    Let it be

Also, the 2-track mono mixes tend to have more punch.

sit yourself down for a whole weekend and listen to:
    Revolver
    Abbey Road
    Magical Mystery Tour
    Sgt.Pepper's
    Let It Be
    The Beatles(white album)

you will have no need for any other music for quite a while.

while you are in your state of musical bliss~go grab a copy of George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"~it is a Masterpiece.seriously.

You can only hear The Beatles for the first time once. I envy the OP.

Loved the Beatles as a kid.

Bought all the CDs when they were on sale at Border's.

    Listened to them in order.

I can understand why a lot of people don't like the Beatles. Pretty bad.

Revolver is great. Rubber Soul, too.

Historically, Sgt. Pepper is up there, especially since Brian Wilson wasn't able to complete Smile.

Often overlooked is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely HC band soundtrack. Hey Bulldog is one of my favorite Beatles sons ever, but as a whole album nothing compares to the White Album.

Hmm. That wasn't one of my more helpful descriptions.

OK- the Beatles are so hyped and revered that for most of my life, my stomach turned at the thought of listening to them. Call it anti-mob mentality.

Analogy- I think Led Zepplin is a great band, but it's so overplayed and overhyped that I literally had to put them away for about 20 years and avoid FM radio until I could appreciate them again.

Also, I grew up with my aunt and my mother singing their pop songs at every family holiday. When you're 13 and you're mom and aunt sing their songs, you sort of tend to look elsewhere.

Revolver has great some songs that still sound edgy.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I will take it all under consideration. I'm really more of a headbanger, but I'm trying to broaden my horizons.

I know what you meant. But, at his age, I did check cnn.com just in case.

Look for deals for the Mono boxset. Sounds amazing. So much punch and depth to the songs.

Lots of fakes out there though so be careful.

I, too, hate cheesy crap - The Beatles being one of my top 5 favorite bands, the only albums that I feel are worth listening to are Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Let it Be (the naked version is great)
I've got a bunch of high end vintage audio gear I'm clearing out, restored Marantz 4270 - better than new condition; Pioneer SX-5590, 8/10; Concept 16.5, 8/10 cosmetically - 10/10 function. Various high end vintage speakers: Rectilinear Research, AR, Kenwood, Infinity, McIntosh, Leslie 251. PM me for details, clearing out to finance home theater upgrade.

The problem with Led Zeppelin is that there are only few of their songs that are "radio friendly" and those are the only ones you hear. Try listening to their albums, such as first three. I am sure it'll help you forget "Stairway To Heaven".

As for The Beatles and the OP, start with Abbey Road.
Taking on them mountains. One hill at a time.
