magnaflow muffler sizing

Im going to replace my rear muffler with a magnaflow muffler. The one that magnaflow uses for the jetta catback is 5x8x14. I was thinking about a 5x8x18 after hearing that the longer the muffler the deeper the sound. What do you guys think? Also, will replacing just the rear make a difference in sound? Should I replace the mid muffler too? I was going to get the magnaflow catback, but cant justify spending that much (also, dont have that much) for a catback exhaust that is only like .2" bigger in diameter. thoughts? any help is appreciated.

Mine is a 4x9x14, fits really well in the stock location. I believe the part no. is 11226. I just added a tip on the end of it. You probably won't notice a whole lot of sound unless you do a mid muffler delete and run pipe in between to the muffler.

honestly from my experience, I would have saved for a catback if I could do it over. i've spent so much on changing to find the sound I want and now i'm changing it again this season.

I agree I dont want to keep changing it up, but if I put on 2 magnaflow mufflers according to their specs, isnt it basically the same thing as their $600+ catback? Except for the .14" difference?

also, if I get the 2.5" inlet, do i mate this to the stock piping? I was planning on just clamping it, but will I have to take it to be welded? or will fit?

Get it welded. Looks cleaner and less chance of exhaust leaks

but dont I need an offset inlet? I was under the car and the stock inlet is more towards the passenger side of the muffler and not centered.

I didn't. I can't remember if I had to mod the factory pipe or not. You will need to fab a hanger for the exhaust.

also, for that price I'd rather buy the muffler and tips separate. I found the same muffler (no tips) for $70 and tips for around $35-50.

Yes, take it to a shop, and get it welded.

You may want to go get quotes from local shops for them supplying the parts and doing the work, and for them just doing the work with your parts.

I dunno man. Welding stainless can be tricky business (TIG). Unless off course the two pieces you are welding together are standard steel. I would buy the hole thing as one piece if you're only going to save ~$20 in materials.

2.25" will be smaller than stock. Get 2.5" or 3" if you want to upgrade the rest of the exhaust later

The mid muffler is a resonator and it is there to reduce drone. Without it it will be louder and probably have some drone at a specific frequency in a certain rpm range.

Depending on the motor and the rear muffler, this drone may sometimes be less noticable or not in a normal cruising rpm range, or worst case it will be right at your highway rpm range and a low frequency = very annoying.

I personally would leave the resonator, or at least replace it with a performance resonator or glass pack

i have a magnaflow set up and love it. cut all the suitcase mufflers and replace the resonator with a good one. i perfer vibrance performance. have the magnaflow muffler welded on the back and youre golden

This is the magnaflow muffler and tip setup that I have. Sounds good, not annoying or overbearing.

Yeah, super steep if they are just welding your parts. I would only pay $50-$75 for that work tops.

See if any local shops sell magnaflow and will give you a deal on the muffler plus install if you buy the parts from them.

I tried doing that. shop couldn't give me any kind of deal even if I was buying the muffler and tip from them. they said it was cheaper to buy one myself online somewhere and then come back to have them do it.

price wise, i'd shop around more and see if you can get some competing bids

yea they sound really good together.. nice tone not loud and raspy. i do think that pricing is a little steep just for a cut and weld

ok now keep in mind i have the 2.0T and you have the 2.5. Probably would change quite a bit right?
