Thread: Weird noise while driving in the rain

  1. 05-14-2012 02:13 AM #1
This is the third time I hear it but it's the first time that i was able to record it
What do you guys think this could be? The only thing that it comes to my mind is the exhaust, I had the stock resonator and tips replaced with magnaflow parts a few months ago, I never heard it before that, btw The sound decreased as I slowed down.

exhaust? doubt it...that sounds mechanical. need to trouble shoot some things.

next time you hear the sound:

    1. drop car to N.
    2. while in N coasting, rev engine to see if engine RPM affects the sound level, pitch, freq, etc.
    3. while in N coasting, brake lightly and then harder to see if wheel speed affects the noise.
    4. drop car back into D to replicate the sound again until you know whether various inputs have an affect or not on the sound.

after that is determined, you'll know if it is engine based, wheel based, or tranny based.

i'd look into the belt tensioner / pulley bearings issue first here.

i'm no mechanic but i would suspect something that is rotating/spinning is making that sound. could be a CV joint or possibly a wheel bearing?

good luck and post findings with solution.

I'll make sure to check all that next time, but I'm not going to be able to check that right away as I can only hear this sound when it rains
I also forgot to mention that the sounds seems to be coming from under the car.

    Thanks

It's the exhaust; there are a couple threads on the issue, stand by one I'll see if I can find them. Your observation of only happening in the rain gives it away

EDIT: Found it; lots of good info in the thread, but the real diagnosis you need begins at post #45 on page 2

    guess i was < 50% correct.

so, it is a shaft rubbing on the exhaust [see? mechanical! ]. cause is exhaust, symptoms are mechanical and a rotating mass.

glad you got it sorted...isn't the vortex awesome?

Had this same thing happen in heavy rain. I read online that it could be the driveshaft center bearing. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the exhaust rubbing on the driveshaft. They adjusted an exhaust clamp/mount to fix it.

Awesome! Now just strap that exhaust down a bit tighter and you should be golden

Glad we were able to help

I used a 2 3/4 clamp to pull the resonator down a little, now i just have to wait for some rain

    Thanks for the help
