OK People....Who has had their ECU quit/die/fry from a TUNE?

Just trying to see if there is a pattern here with Model Years and which Tune.

In this Poll only room for 10 options, So ill use APR,REVO,GIAC and all MK6 years Unitronic.

    thanks

EDIT: Damn, i should have not made it public so people arent worried about others seeing their name. Can a moderator change this so others cannot see who voted for what?

    thanks

Voted , that I had to vote.

*edit* I'm not placing blame on the tune or installer right now since I really don't know. I'm just simply stating that I have a 2012 GTI and had the APR flash when my ECM fried. I got my car tuned with a couple thousand miles on it and now am at over 18,000 miles.

thanks....hoping mods can change it so not public.

I think this might help to see model year trends, and tunes. Maybe this can help tuners to see if their is an issue with their tune, or possibly how trends that VW might be doing something different in the stock tune/ecu?

at this point noone knows for sure, but with more info like this poll maybe we can figure it out.

What I'm really curious about is whether anyone who is completely stock has had this happen. From what I understand and from what I'm told, it is VERY rare for the ECM to go.

there is a reason to believe vw maybe changing something on the later 2012's ecu's.
I know other company's like Mercedes puts a ground to the casing so when you spit the casing it essentially bricks the ecu unless you have the "special tool"

This isn't going to be very accurate. Especially considering 50 votes for apr may represent 1% of their total ecu's reflashed. Where as 50 votes for Revo may be 5%. Not to mention the amount of people that are tuned who take the poll. In any case I think it's accurate to state that frying the ecu depends 99% on the dealer who installs it.

Public keeps accountability, making sure that no ones tries to swing the vote.

We have some fanbois and haters around here who might vote for a tuner that they dislike. Yeah it sounds crazy, but I could see someone doing it.

Can't say I like the poll, it's a bit skewed, would be better that for each different tune, you have an option that is either "its still working" or "it broke"

Simply seeing 2 people that voted yes for apr 2012 doesn't really mean anything. Does that make sense? should be like

    apr 2012 working
    apr 2012 broke
    apr 2011 working
    apr 2011 broke

    ect..

Poll has a maximum. I say we ignore the years and just put the brand and whether it is working or not. Then if you replied no mine is fried put the year in a reply.

To get any interesting info we'd have to know how many people of a certain model year have tuned their car compared to how many friend their ECU.

A local guy got his ECU fried with a Unitronic tune, IIRC.

I had 2 fried on my 2010 cc. Though, it had nothing to do with type of Tune ie apr/Giac. There are many happy customers of various software tuners out there. With my experience, it was installer error, not correctly resealing ecu.

Yeah I think it has to do with installer error. Of course you're going to see more fried ECUs with APR because they have more customers.

This poll is useless for a number of reasons, but primarily you have no idea what the total amount of sales of each is. If 10 people voted APR and 1 voted Unitronic you may assume Uni is more 'reliable' in that regard. However, little did you know that APR sold 1000 tunes for every 1 Unitronic (I'm obviously making these numbers up). See the problem?

    Pointless poll is pointless.

It might be useful to see how many UNTUNED cars have had ECU failures.

It was an APR tune and it was 100% the installers fault, 1 car wash after getting the tune and the ecu was shot

    Installed was eurocodetuning

We have about an 80-90% market share in the US. You'll see more people report damaged ECUs with whoever is the market leader.

Wish I could "like" comments like in Facebook, but that's quite impressive. I'd say with those numbers, the few cars that have had issues is pretty miniscule. Just bad luck for me though

Took delivery of a 2012 in October, had CEL issues within two days, and it was finally determined after over a month at the dealer that it needed a new ECU. The car was bone stock and had less than 1000 miles on it. Thankfully, VWoA gave me a new car.

As has been said, this poll is useless.

    You want to know
    1. what percentage of each company's tune have been associated with ECR failures.
For that you need to know what percentage of the market (or the Forum members because those are the people voting) each tuner has captured compared to the percentage of failures.

Even then you don't know if it's a tuner's fault or an installer's fault.

    2. What percentage of stock ECUs fail. So you need every forum member, tuned or not, to vote.

Otherwise all you get is what you have already seen. All the failures are APR because almost everyone on the forum has APR.

    So what?

I think the poll should be left as-is. Having your username attached gives a sense of credibility...otherwise under the cloak of anonymity I could vote for whatever company I like the least, without ever having a tune on my car.

I think the poll should be left as-is. Having your username attached gives a sense of credibility...otherwise under the cloak of anonymity I could vote for whatever company I like the least, without ever having a tune on my car.
I guess I never thought of it this way....if people are not honest then this should work better, however i worry some people might not want to post???

As for if the poll is good or not, I think we all realize and its pretty obvious APR sells many more tunes, so the poll should skew toward APR automatically, that in no way means its only them who has any probs.

My reason for this is simple, I have a 2012, and am ready for a tune, and have been reading in the recent month or so several ECUs being fried, all 2012 and all APR.

So even though the poll may be skewed, im taking it all into account when i decide for myself and my 2012. At least this is better then NO POLL at all, information can only help and people need to take away what they feel is the right thing for them.

Ive been leaning toward REVO more and more cause they have great reviews, and for me my local APR installer is too new for me to trust, and have seen many REVO users between this site and the MK6 site, no issues on 2012s so far.

I also find it interesting there are some 2010 APR ECUs in this poll, I guess its all leading back to the installer and not sealed properly, And i have read the posts from APR where they are taking care of business and standing behind their tunes and dealers, even if it was due to poor install, major kudos to APR!
