Remove the upstream O2 sensor from the pipe and drive. If it's better, replace the catalytic converter.

86k.
picked car up couple weeks back. im older now so dont spend much time racing around town nd what not. but what i noticed is that when i am acclerating and the rpms get from 3-4k there is no power from there up. seems like the engine makes noise, i hear the exhaust getting louder but dont seems like the car dogs out around that time. not sure if its normal and its because its a slow car. 2.0 and such. but seems odd to me. thought it would still pull up and over 3-4k
?
dont know the history of the car. just know it has a intake and clean low mile 2door golf.
appreciate any input

not really sure what your talking about? this o2 sensor goes into exhaust from under the car?
p.o. had just installed an exhaust prior to sale. but you mean maybe the cat is clogged and thats why the lag?

Yes.
If you remove the upstream O2 sensor from the pipe and drive, it will be loud, but you're creating another path for exhaust to escape. Therefore, if you have good power over 3000 RPM with the sensor removed, the catalytic converter is clogged. Keep in mind though, converters can break up and create clogs further downstream (ie, in the muffler). While rare, it is possible.
Typical symptoms are as you describe. Engine runs smooth, but around 300-4000 RPM it gets loud and power falls off. I've seen cars that lose only a little power, and I've seen cars that are flat-out scary to drive because they can't top 20mph due to this condition. Usually it doesn't throw a fault code.
If the converter is clogged, you should go about figuring out why, as 99% of converter failures are a symptom rather than a cause, and you don't want a repeat failure.

ill check it tomorrow when the rain stops.
it just unscrews?
no cel now.
and no real other issues, that ive noticed.
except when i start the car. tends to sound cam like. off idle. but then when it warms up, idle seems fine.
its just when cold that it has an old race car style idle. tach seems ok. but car sounds real poppy till it heats up a bit?

another noobish, no knowledge question.
do i have obd1 or 2 in 95 2 door golf sport.

Yes it just unscrews. It may be siezed in the pipe though, which is another issue. Where are you located?
For 1995, the car is technically OBDI. But OBDII. 94-95 had OBDII connectors, but it seems as though only some are capable of communicating with an OBDII scan tool. ALL are capable of communication with VCDS![]()
