Heffery is actually our resident expert on straight piping Volkswagens. I suggest looking up his name, he would know best.

i cant comment on the volume of a TDI straight pipe, however, I wholly support it.

I know the MK4 tdi's sound really good with the end muffler replace with straight pipe. not to mention it looks awesome when you can dump black smoke

Performing a muffler-ectomy on a MKV TDI really doesn't change much.

I own a 2010 TDI w/ DSG and have a Banks Power exhaust system on it (which is essentially no muffler and just piping from the cat. The CR engine has 3 (or maybe 2, don't remember) cats and a DPF and those items alone cut down almost all of the volume. Ask anyone who has removed the muffler on a MKV TDI and they'll all tell you the difference is so minimal it's almost none.

for reference, under load, I hear a slight depth to my exhaust now. However, the key word is slight.

Removing a muffler vs straight piping should be a huge difference. Coming from a petrol engine, anyway. I really shouldn't be chiming in about TDI, since the only diesel I've owned was my tow truck.

someone said it best, straight piping the exhaust won't give you that desired effect. You'll need a down pipe and some cat deletes. don't worry, no emissions on diesel. Start with the down pipe and muffler/resonator delete. Seldom do you find people who enjoy strait piped anything unless they're race cars. my friends straight piped E28 335 is one of the most ferocious sounding cars I've ever heard and if it weren't for the fact that he shot fireballs I would hate it. Honestly, he comes down my block and sets off damn near ever alarm....and that's him babying it!

So i could remoe the middle muffle and keep the rear one. And just get a catless downpipe, and this would give me the "pooow" sound? Would engine management light cone on, or would it fail emissions test?

Well...i was just round at my local garage, the mechanic says i should get that sound by just removing the back box and straight piping it. What do yous think? I know that leons get that sound.
