i have a set of 18" factory Mercedes rims. They are 5 spoke, not sure what they came off. Anyways, I run them on my B5.5 passat. They all require a thin O-ring to fit the interior of the center cap area in order to mount on my car. Long story short, I lost one of them. Any ideas where to find one? Or what there actually called?

    much appreciated

That is a hubcentric ring. Any performance shop, or wheel/tire place can order them for you. Easiest thing to do is bring one of your other ones into the shop and order the same size. It should have a 57.1mm ID and an OD matching the hub on the wheel. If it's an OEM merc it is probably 66.6mm.

But the ring you have will have measurements stamped on it.
Buy my clear GTI sidemarkers cheap!
Will VagCom Mk5 and 6 in the GTA for donuts!

Plastic is fine... aluminum is nice, but they can get wedged in the hub due to them being different metals. I'm really surprised that he hadn't heard of aluminum ones though.....

i work at a tire shop you can get aluminum ones but they cost more to do the same thing. plastic is cheaper and wont corrode. meaning when you get a flat you dont have to beat the wheel off the hub.

Plastic ones are the way to go.
